Re: Historical Naval actions that would make good movies?
I think 1940 around the French Fleet, in particular the Jean Bart would make a great movie. In particular as it would be hard to draw a black white picture of good and bad and it would not have a silly happy end that in real war just doesn't exist.

Re: Bismarck and Prince Eugen replaced by...
I meant to point out the differences in the class as well as showing that more than 28kn were already achieved during the trials. I also think that the 28kn often mentioned for the class are a reasonable average, given the differences between the ships, their increasing displacement with the progres...

Re: Bismarck and Prince Eugen replaced by...
It's in the logs at the time of the Bismarck chase. This is the highest speed I know of that was recorded on a KGV-class BB. The trials showed the following results: KGV: 28.0kn PoW: 28.0kn DoY: 28.3kn Anson: 27.62kn Howe: 27.5kn So DoY exceeded 28kn on trials, but the average for the class was abou...

Yamato recorded 27.5 knots on trials.
RF, you're right, but so is lwd. Refueling at sea is not a small thing to do when trying to break out into the Atlantic and involves a few strategic risks.

Re: Bismarck and Prince Eugen replaced by...
The Yamato did not have enough fuel to make a high speed cruise or even a top speed cruise and go all the way from Norway via Denmark Strait to Brest. At 27 knots you could run the machinery for 100 hours before the fuel runs out, considering secondary fuel consumers this gives a range of about 2150...

I think they may have run out of fuel before getting there.

Re: Best war movie ever?
Two of my favorites are Das Boot and Full Metal Jacket. I also consider Letters from Iwo Jima a good war movie.
I didn't like Saving Private Ryan at all.

Re: Bismarck and Prince Eugen replaced by...
I think it is more like a "had Germany had these ships" rather than a "had the US or Japan had their ships in that place" kind of question.

Re: Bismarck and Prince Eugen replaced by...
The US ships are fast enough to shake off the pursuing Norfolk and Suffolk. They'd be really hard to intercept and, with the late war radar, they'd probably be a really tough match in a battle. However, one always has to remember that Bismarck was very lucky with sinking Hood as quickly as she did, ...

Re: Battle Tracks at Denmark Strait
Vic, I have a question as well. You quote Mühlheim-Rechenberg as one of your sources. He states that the range at which Hood was destroyed to be 18000meters. In your chart it appears to be less. Why did you decide against M-R's number? And for someone who's never paid much attention to the charts of...

Re: Unluckiest Warship
Stability problems aren't a matter of luck, are they? Mogami managed to sink five ships with a spread of six torpedoes, you'd call that luck if it hadn't been friendly ones. Unlucky for each of the five sunk. Having read up a bit about Mogami recently, I think she's indeed a good candidate. Not onl...

Re: Photo Nh 69730 evaluation
From height to length I'd estimate 30° and from the position of the mast I'd estimate 25°. I can't make out the tip of gaff Vic talks about. It isn't smart to extrapolate from a that short basis anyway. I also wonder who came up with 45°?

Re: Battle Tracks at Denmark Strait
How can you be so dismissive? I haven't read a single witness report from PG that contains your statements wrt fall of shot of Hood's fire. So instead of disregarding other people work you might want to use it to improve your own, as it isn't perfect.
