SMS Mackensen v KGV

Hi A lot is often made about the fact that the Bismarck v Hood was new battleship v old battlecruiser. What if the roles were reversed using SMS Mackensen v KGV? I was going to pick SMS Hindenburg as she was the best German battlecruiser completed from WW1, but as Hood was not completed during the w...

Re: Was Bismarck a mis-hitter?

For years I was puzzled by the end-fight and why Bismarck was silenced so quickly. I finally got knowledge of some serious assumptions/theory but it sounds all very acceptable to me. Yes the Bismarck did hit nothing because of the overwhelming odds and lousy own circumstances. Statistically (and in...

Bismarck "He" Tirpitz "She"

Hi

Bismarck is generally referred to as being a "He" by most people. Hitlers reason I believe was because he thought the ship was to powerfull to be called a "she".

If Bismarck was a she then why is his sister ship, equally as powerfull referred to as a "she"?

Re: Bismarck vs. South Dakota @ 1942

fair enough Karl

does the South Dakota have the super heavy 16in APC shells or did they come later?

Bismarck being in the Pacific would make things a bit easier on the RN

Re: Bismarck vs. South Dakota @ 1942

are you assuming that the same daftass american sailer is onboard to cause the exact same problem that the South Dakota suffered at Guadalcanal?

is the US Navy not allowed to learn from there mistakes unlike the Kriegsmarine?

Re: BS speed - last battle

If she had been going faster (firing her guns or not), and the jammed rudders caused her to swerve erradically (as they did), I see one of two things happening: 1. The British stay long enough to reduce her to the useless hulk of steel that she did become, causing them to either have to go at a cra...

Re: BS speed - last battle

You are theorizing that the failure to hit the enemy will result in a longer fight. And what does this accomplish? The British run out of fuel and become uboat fodder or have to leave before the job is done? Maybe more of Bismarck's crew survive because some of them are picked up by uboats? A briti...

Re: Mers-el-Kebir and Toulon

Basically the French were between a rock and a hard place with agreement with the Germans although I do think they would have scuttled the ships to stop the Germans/Italians getting there hands on them if it really came down to it. Where the Fleet commanders good at negatiations by any interest, or ...

You are theorizing that the failure to hit the enemy will result in a longer fight. And what does this accomplish? Hes trying to say that if the Bismarck steamed as fast as she could, eratic course and all she would have survived longer than she did steaming a steady course at 7 knots as she would ...

Re: BS speed - last battle

 Hmmm... Good point, although I think it would have been better to be moving around partially blind rather than being able to see and having a quarter of the time to destroy the enemy before they start holing you up  But yes, Lutjens was probably thinking about the gunnery aim (athoug...

Ciao Paul and all, very god selection Paul, I knew that sooner or later somebody was going to publish those photos  . From the pics everybody can easily notice one thing : after the German bomb penetrated the deck behind B turret, exploding into the main charge magazines ( photo 1 and 2 ) , t...

probably looking at the White Cliffs of Dover!! anyway, as Karl has pointed out the UK was on the back foot and fighting for survival, like a boxer on the ropes. they also had to think about the following 1 Could the Germans be trusted not to sieze the fleet giving there form on treaty keeping. 2 It...

POW gets a lucky shot "Brits need it" and takes out Bismarcks Fire Control. Bismarcks gunnery falls off a bit under local control and both ships take damage. Wake Walker orders Leach to disengage as before. Having received more damage I think that Lutjens decides to do a 180 and blast past...
