That depends a bit on semantics. It's not clear that Yamato managed to hit another warship with her main battery. So yes she could hit the ocean pretty hard but if you are talking hitting opposing warships Rodney clearly did and did considerable damage in the process.

Hardly a "smoke screen" (was the pun intentional?). It was developed as a smoke weapon. The fact that it was also a very good antipersonel/antimaterial weapon was just a beneficial side effect. Note that direct effects of WP (it the burning) were legal it was the effect of the smoke that m...

WP has been traditionally associated with smoke not incinidary or anit-personel. That said most of those who used it at least as hand grenades knew the other properties fairly well. Especially when you consider that when phosphorus burns it produces diphosphorus pentoxide which is hydroscopic. It's ...

From the Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Rodney_%2829%29 After this, she went to Boston, Massachusetts, for engine repairs. For what it's worth. Here's another site so this time Wiki may have got it right. http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/rodney.htm But the ship had major structural...

Hey, Rodney´s concussion phenomena didn´t impair her ability to aim or fire properly? During the May 27th fight against Bismarck the British ships took a while before straddling an easy target as the German BB. Was it possible that it was due in part to this? I'm not sure how easy a target Bismark ...

I´m not crazy: ... Not to knock the Yamato class, but what with radar-directed gunnery and the generally higher state of training , an Iowa alone-- or especially an Iowa with almost any other battlewagon(s) in concert, as would have certainly been the case--would have won handily, I imagine. .... N...

The ocassion were tghe allies were outnumbered demostrate a great deal of courage and superior warrior skills that, in many other episodes, lacks. I'm not quite sure what you just said. Could you clarify and give some examples of those "episodes"? And the discussion was about the fact tha...

... To most of you the RFC is a guarantee that any allied BB could beat any axis BB with ease, anytime. Not from what I've seen. It does help a lot in most circumstances but clearly there are cases where it won't and I have yet to see someone on this board say different And of course that Yamato ha...

Radar hardly guarantees a win it just gives the side that has it a big advantage in many (not all cases). In this case a Yamato vs an Iowa with both having equivalant radar fire control the Yamato has a number of advantages that add up to it haveing a better than even chance of winning. If you match...

... If we see WWII history is relevant to note that the allies never aproached and engaged an equivalent enemy ship on a one to one basis but only with disproporcionate numerical superiority. And being the opportunity, as the sinking of Yamato plainly demostrate, ... I seam to recall the Renown tak...

SoDak also had a rather dubious claim regarding the number of planes shot down in at least one battle. I think the Enterprise crew were a bit upset with that one (could).

I don't ever remember seeing anything about a court martial on the otherhand I suspect his popularity among the officers and crew was less than optimal for a while. Depends on how you define "getting in trouble". It did pretty much guarantee that mistake wouldn't be made again on SoDak.

Not from what I've read. They were unable to repair these items even in port. Fresh water is a necessity and without an adequate supply or the ability to generate more she isn't making it home.

The original position calculation could well have been off. That's hardly unheard of and one of the real problems with reconstructing some battles.

lwd, My only problem with your statement was that you said "most" of the US battleships achieved first round straddles. I think Colorado did and I think that was not unusual with mk 8 radar assisted FC systems. I may have got a bit exhuberant there. However of the 5 that fired 3 were Mk 8...
