Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
And despite high pressures and temperatures, German powerplants weren't particularly fuel-efficient. Question is why not.

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
Does Herr Nilsson have primary sources to support his theory? After all, to be logical, Germans should have been world leaders in large warship propulsion engineering which I doubt as e.g. Whitley's books mention plenty of inefficiencies and serious reliability issues with German powerplants.

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
Does the book discuss why Germans adopted 3-shaft propulsion? In detail discussing prod and cons. I think the way to accommodate everyone's wishes would have been a two-volume set. One volume concentrating on the design and engineering while the other on operations. Those not interested in machinery...

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
Marcel, also Agassiz, Bartolomeo Colleoni, Intrepid, Alliance and Fairmile D have good machinery coverage.

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
But isn't 3rd Reich era official state materials public domain ever since the end of the war?
I my opinion, for 3 authors with decades worth of not-minimum-wages job 750 euros is peanuts. I have spent over 10,000 € on my book and comics collection.

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
Mr. Jurens, why would delving into primary sources be prohibitely expensive? Are the archives possessing the blueprints some sort of robber barons or extortionists?

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
Thank you Bill Jurens for the interjection. A couple of points are still due. For example, Jurens mentions "Anatomy of the Ship" -type texts in existence. May I ask which texts he refers to? As far as I know, the AotS-series has/has had two Bismarck titles so far published by the different...

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
Since Mr. Jurens is a member of this board, I wonder if he could interject here and explain the reasons for the above-mentioned shortcomings? I do find it odd that with authors of such engineering backgrounds the end result is not THE engineering bible on the ship.

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History
What I'd going on? I have read today two reviewers saying that this book has disappointingly poor coverage of the engineering aspects of the ship like machinery and structural details. Is this really true that a 600-page book on a single ship fails to deliver? I did expect this to be the bible on th...

R. A. Burt vs. Raven & Roberts on British battleships
How does these authors' approach differ? What does Burt have that Raven & Roberts don't? And vice versa.

Re: Women On Submarines Considered
The way I see it is that either women should be kicked out of the military totally (or prevented from even entering it) or be given exactly equal treatment. That means that there should be absolutely NO special privileges for women. NO separate toilets or showers, NO lower physical standards and so ...
