Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
I'm not so sure about the 3 belt hits; the 3 expeditions recorded different things. Also, eye-witnesses from Rodney testified about 4-5 shells in a row exploding against Bismarck's freeboard tearing huge pieces of armor plate. 50% of North Carolina was vulnerable to destroyer fire, and thus to floo...

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
- North Carolina under fire from KGV/ROdney/Norfolk/Dorsetshire would explode within minutes, as the main belt was 305mm thick Class A armor and did not provide enough protection against 14" and 16" below 20km in any probable obliquities. The main magazines would be perforated and destroy...

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
Even with the H class you see the same kind of thing. Fully laden it would have been 62,000 tons, 5000 more than an Iowa while being slower, less powerfully armed, shorter range and far less turret and barbette armor. The US seemed to get a lot more for their displacement with their designs. Hello,...

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
The 16" gun was considered but rejected mainly for political reasons. At the time the only European battleships with 16" guns were the Nelsons and it was thought for the time being that a German design with 16" guns would be seen as a challenge directed toward the British. This was a...

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
RobertsonN said "As related in various books (Breyer, Whitley) the Bismarck was originally planned to have 8 33 cm guns. This later changed to 35 cm, which was considered to have fully satisfactory penetrative capabilities for expected battle ranges. The 38 cm was substituted at a fairly late s...

H class guns on Tirpitz
The H class turret weighed nearly 1500 tons as against 1050 for a Bismarck class turret. The Tirpiz could have mounted 8 16 inch guns with a total greater ship weight of about 2000 tons more. Even after strengthening of bulkheads and barbettes the weight increase wouldn't have been much more than th...

Re: Tirpitz shelling New York
Yes I agree, she would have had a lot to evade. I knew about the 3 British fast capital ships but that's two less than the Royal Navy had when Bismarck sailed. I didn't know both US fast battleships were in the Atlantic, I thought only one of them. Oh well so that does put the odds back to 5 - 1. Bu...

Tirpitz shelling New York
Not trying to offend any Americans! Just saying in Feb of 1942 Tirpitz heads out on an Atlantic mission and everyone thinks it's after convoys. But the Captain has sealed orders on board only to be opened if he breaks out succesfully. These orders tell him to carry out a bombardment operation agains...

Re: Bismarck vs. Iowa
"Well, the 12 boilers were grouped into 6 different watertight compartments, and the turbines were divided into 3 turbine rooms. The internal subdivision was very good..." Oh okay, that does make things a lot better then. It gives the Tirpitz far more of a fighting chance than I actually f...

Re: Bismarck vs. Iowa
Hi, thanks for the welcome. A lot of what you said I agree with. I was also thinking Tirpitz would have a higher rate of fire, probably in the order of 3 salvos for every 2 by Iowa and that that could play a major role in the outcome. I was also thinking that even if Tirpitz couldn't cleanly penetra...

Re: Bismarck vs. Iowa
If there was a situation where the Iowa, soon after comissioning, went for a patrol with a few escorting destroyers in the North Sea in say August 1943 then a fight with Tirpitz might have happened. Lets say Tirpitz is out on it's own on a trip to improve crew training and test the guns a bit. Iowa ...
