Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941

In these types of attacks none of the torpedo equipped Sword Fish had radars, only the search planes. Thus all of the Torpedo planes had to attack visually. If the Swordfish have to rely on visuals to spot the Germans and get down to sea level to drop torpedos, then the Germans with an carrier could...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941

How can the Swordfish use ASV radar in 1941 , when it was first mounted in 1943. In 1940/41, what few ASV sets that were build were installed on medium and long range patrol bombers, because that was the only planes that could mount and operate them. Only a couple of sets were experimentally mounted...

Re: Armor of the Admiral Hipper class cruisers

But coming back to GHG, got any pictures, drawings, details of installations, etc? Any reason why Hipper and Blucher didn't get the equipment? You are right ... I also have never seen any pictures or drawings of placement GHG-system to PG... Blucher was not likely GHG-system due to short life. Hipp...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941

Yes but the lack of any hits by the Albacores was in no small part due to the intensity of the flak and what little aircover they put up. With much better air cover, they will not do any better than the March 1942 attacks. The ar-196s played no part in the stopping the TB attack. The TB attack fail...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941

you guys are assuming both carrier forces get in contact but I dont think it is that easy. this is not Midway were both sides look for battle. here we have the British wanting to engage and the Germans trying to avoid contact and decide when and where to break into open ocean at a time of their cho...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers

I think the problem is this article it self, it has no sources for the information and we should all entertain doubts to its relevance and accuracy. While it does explore the various TDS designs employed through last century, it doesn't make any real connection between improving TDS and actual resul...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers

Firstly the Term "Panzerschiffe" or armored ship originated from the 1870s. Infact the Deutschland was Panzerschiffe # 26 , while Scheer and Graf Spee were Panzerschiffe # 27 & 28. These Armored ships were outgrowths of the armored frigates of the mid 1800s. So the Term Panzerschiffe d...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers

Panzerschiffe definately had a TDS. It may not have been great, but then anything is an improvement over nothing.

Re: The sinking of Scharnhost

The reason the admiralty feared loan raiders sweeping the oceans sinking their convoys was because ....from their POV {A} ....capital ship attacking convoy with maybe a cruiser or two escort equals total destruction of the convy. {B} ....world support for the UK in any clash with resurgent nazi was ...

Re: The sinking of Scharnhost

I’m of the same belief that only ammunition storage could offer such an explosion so to rip a capital ship apart. As I see it, IF they really wanted the results of such superbly built and effective ships like Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Admiral Hipper etc., they would’ve kept them to...

Re: A ship history : Scharnhorst

Bey was at best a 'Rear Admiral' .... 'Konteradmiral' I think the Germans called it and he was only promoted to that position the day before the battle. He had been earned medals and a captainship in 1940 during the do-or-die break out attempt, in the 'second battle of Narvik', against the larger Br...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941

5 out of 5 is too small a number of samples to be anything other than anecdotal information. From what I’m told for human decisions you need dozens of samples to get any prediction of success or failure. The error bar would have to be substantial. For example the next 20 attempts could all succeed, ...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941

That statistic needs to be qualified. Due to enigma decrypts and photographic intelligence it was the case that the more significant ships, such as raiders, attracted Allied forces attention, while insignificant coastal shipping wasn't worth making a special effort. The fact is that in 1942 and 194...
