Re: Is this a dumb (on my part) question on Bismarck's armor

... on a displacement of 50,000 tons, she only had 17,000 tons of armor, which is around 30% of her total weight. According to my perceptions of Nathan Okun's very incredible dissertation on her, would it be safe to conclude that Bismarck was lightly armored??? Within these parameters what tonnage ...

Re: A What-If on Liquid v. Air cooled/Radial v. Vee v. inlin

Ok, back on task... My original reason for this post was to see what sort of engine you would design, if you were responsible for engine development in WW2. I posted my idea, and that is the rough format for your entries. Just so long as you get the basics. And note this is not about an engine that ...

San Bernardino Strait and Leyte Gulf as back to back sequels

An updated, and more accurate story of the Torpedo Boats in WW2, where US "plywood cockleshells" slugged it out with the Tokyo Express.

And maybe a thousand other scenarios

Gentlemen, On this theme, which was the best aircraft engine in WW2 the in line or the radial and what were their merits (or otherwise) Hi Paul. Good question. According to what Data I have available, Radial Engines were the preferred aircraft engine, although the preference is usually subjective t...

A What-If on Liquid v. Air cooled/Radial v. Vee v. inline.

So I was thinking. There were a LOT of engines available for both Tank and Aircraft manufacturers in WW2. Some of them were cool, and some of them were absolutely horrible. My question is IF You were to design a WW2 vehicle (small to medium aircraft, medium to large land vehicle, boats of up to 80 o...

Re: battleship barrel service round limit?

Changing a battleship one is very expensive and time consimung (assuming that the guns are available which may not be the case). Umm...if it were that expensive, they would not be putting service round limits on the gun. In fact, they wouldn't even be building the battleship. Its one of those thing...

Re: Obama´s mosque

In short, people have got to realize that if this looser of a president gets reelected then it will be the end of the US as most know it! IMHO Amen. You know. I spent 6 years in the army. And my time in this nation's military has left me with the impression that the only thing service is good for i...

Re: Is this a dumb (on my part) question on Bismarck's armor

Steffen, one should be very prudent with this kind of statistics. It's difficult to compare the weight of armor of different ships because the navies of WWII didn't use the same methodology to compute the weight of armor. It's like comparing apple and oranges ... Best, Francis Marliere I understand...

The Amtank, Lessons at Tarawa, and "what ifs"

LVT series tracked vehicles changed the way amphibious war was fought when they first debuted. And this was exceptionally well highlighted, when the Reefs of Tarawa prevented the landing craft from reaching the shingle to drop their ramps, and the first troops of the first wave to actually hit the b...

have to disagree about not mapping a field, maybe not done by everyone but most certainly mapping was done major combatants. i have copies of manuals that stress mapping as major importance. If they were mapped properly then why is it so hard to find the minefield? I could see some inaccuracies cau...

Re: German tanks

How was the commander here able to excercise his command function and achieve his mission? The complaint given to Fuhrer control was that it robbed the panzers and panzer grenadiers of their true mobility, because their positioning was directed by Hitler himself. Or was it by this time that Hitlers...

Re: Bismarck against BB-57 South Dakota

Just too lazy to read all the posts here. Did anyone cover the fact that SoDak sailed into battle with her breakers "Tied down" (whatever that means)? That's what I understood led to her loss of FC and Radar.
