Re: Holland Shadows Instead

Hi Vic! In your earlier post you pointed out that Tovey and Holland were subject to certain pressures that required Holland to engage instead of shadow and Tovey to order Holland to do just that. To me these pressures have a political nature (see Churchill criticizing Leach for disengaging). That ma...

Re: Holland Shadows Instead

Hi Dave! I kind of disagree with some of these premises. After I posted those premises I read your following post about the 25000 yard limitation and shut down and warm up time. That post of yours raised real questions so I followed with a post in which I disagreed with my own same premises! However...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Hi lwd! You asked I'm curious why you chose two different quarters. The two KGV's are approaching from behind. Yamato has only one rear main battery so it can't shoot at both anyway and greater separation makes it harder to switch targets. Greater separation also might expose the back of the turret ...

Re: Holland Shadows Instead

Thanks Dave Saxton! If you look at my post just above, that's what I was looking for! And it makes my scenario a lot dicier. Perhaps with three radars on Suffolk , PoW and Hood , you might be able to have one or two on at all times despite the shutdown and warm up time problem. But I was counting on...

Re: Holland Shadows Instead

Hi Bgile and VIc. Thanks for the good responses. A. Risk Of Losing Contact I agree that shadowing was difficult; as I see it, keeping touch with Bismarck until Holland and Tovey's forces could be concentrated upon her was the most difficult problem the British faced. Historically it turned out to be...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

Hi Bgile! You are right. It has been a common practice to have CBG's in the Gulf for war support and to show the flag. In the last couple of years the Iranian Sunburn missiles (and maybe a claimed high speed torpedo) have emerged as a threat. So lately the thinking has been "do we really have t...

Holland Shadows Bismarck Instead

Hi all! For reasons I'll mention later, this scenario assumes that within 24 hours , Tovey's force could have been guided by Holland's shadowing force into position to intercept the German ships from the east or south. I think that Tovey was close enough to do that at the time of the Denmark Strait ...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

Nevertheless we have to admitt that the USN is not the branch that has been too keen on doing idiotic moves. The Army still have the podium with guys like Hooker, Burnside, Early, Ewell, Custer, Freyendhal, Westmoreland, etc..... That's a very interesting observation. And an accurate one too, based...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato

Hi all! I'm new to these boards but have read a lot so I thought I'd "weigh in". I may stand to be corrected, but it appears from putting together what I have read on a lot of the threads is that (1) the KGV has a two knot speed advantage and (2) their guns could penetrate the Yamato's arm...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

Hi Bgile! In reply. . .. So you think we should withdraw our CVBGs from the Persian Gulf, because it's too dangerous for them to be there? Generally the CBG's operate several hundred miles out in the Arabian Sea. That gives them the best defense against say a Silkworm or Skval high speed torpedo bec...

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?

HI all- new to this Board. I can think of a few ways, not intended to be an exclusive list. 1. Stupid deployment such as sending a CBG into the narrow confined Persian Gulf, where it is exposed to short range land based anti ship missile and air attack or subject to beingcooped up by a sunken blocks...
