Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History

I don't understand why you believe that a German victory at Jutland gives them automatic control of the English Channel. They could try - as per the Flandern flotilla - but the narrowness of the Straits of Dover turns the Manche into something of a mousetrap for the German dreadnoughts. Apart from ...

Re: Most Beautiful Dreadnought

BB-35, the USS Texas...why? Because it is the only one left....and we are losing it along with the great USS Olympia of SpanAmWar fame but also WWI service. Wake up, the dominos are falling. If we cannot save these two ships forget the WWII ships that will need help in fifty years. The current effo...

Re: HMS Hood & USS Arizona Magazine Explosions

Royal Oak too! http://talesfromthedeep.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/hms-royal-oak2.jpg I wonder what that long rent in the hull plating is from? Some kind of shockwave/stress effect from the 4 torpedoes hitting on the other side? Also, I remember reading in the book I have about the sinking (I belie...

Thanks Dave. Oh and I meant 'confirm'. Once again posting after a night at work haha! I don't drink at work (unlike most DJs I know) but I get very spacey from being tired, but then I cannot sleep.

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Great, thanks for posting Dave, Thorsten, and RF--glad we could clear up the misunderstanding that Bismarck was somehow flawed in relation to his contemporaries in terms of hull armor, armor on the bow, weak stern, and AA. No doubt the AA would have been beefed up considerably had Bismarck survived ...

Re: HMS Hood & USS Arizona Magazine Explosions

Royal Oak too! http://talesfromthedeep.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/hms-royal-oak2.jpg But question....Tirpitz rolled over, but did her turrets dislodge? Or did she not roll enough? Thanks for posting that recreation. I'm not sure about the Tirpitz--but I do seem to recall reading that the one turre...

Re: Bismarck refuels and does repairs

Ah OK I thought we were still discussing the Bismarck repairing the damage and remaining at sea. Theoretically speaking, the Lancasters might have had a chance to damage Bismarck in Brest if he was stationary, yes--unlike they would have trying to bomb Bismarck more or less fully operational and at ...

Re: HMS Hood & USS Arizona Magazine Explosions

Another link showing a drawing of the Oklahoma at rest nearly upside down. http://www.ussoklahomabb37.ussindianabb58.com/ship/BB-37_Oklahoma105c.jpg Obviously the mud of the 40 foot harbor bottom could have kept the turrets from falling out completely, even if they weren't held in place somehow. But ...

Re: HMS Hood & USS Arizona Magazine Explosions

I am also wondering if the turrets of the US super dreadnoughts were somehow locked or held into the barbettes, as opposed to falling out when capsized. Observe the salvage of the Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor. The ship was nearly upside down, to the extent that the forward superstructure was crushed. Ye...

Re: Pre-Dreadnoughts refitted to meet Dreadnought standard

I would guess that the work entailed would be quite complex and expensive. Those ships were designed with tight parameters, just throwing on an extra turret would NOT be a simple matter, and probably couldn't be done at all without a major rebuild. I would be willing to bet that fitting an extra tur...

Re: Bismarck refuels and does repairs

That plan would never materialise. Bismarck would probably be tracked again by reconnaissance aircrafts, as earlier. She could disappear for a while and hide from the British, but eventually the battle cruisers and King George and the Rodney would catch up with the Bismarck and force her to respond...

Re: SCHARNHORST PAPER MODEL 1 : 200

I would love to try building a couple of the many paper models I bought. One question I have though--how difficult is it to maintain accuracy and prevent the 'warping effect' I have seen with a lot of these?

From the appearance of your photographs, you have solved the problem. Very impressive!
