The RN often used "cables" for short distances as well as miles.

..... FWIW, I would interpret "0.4" as representing 4/10ths of a sea mile, i.e. 800 yards.

Re: The Plot - relative motion

..... In order for two ships, each travelling at 30 kts, to increase the distance between them by 10,000 yards in 6 minutes, their respective courses must diverge by approximately 113 degrees. I would imagine that a simple comparison of the headings of the two ships on the track chart can demonstrat...

Re: The Plot

I can think of no battle in which 8in guns fired with any real effect upon the target. Wow, that's quite a statement. First battle of Guadalcanal. Portland and San Francisco vs Hiei. Devonshire vs Atlantis. Wichita and Tuscaloosa vs various French ships at Casablanca. San Francisco and Salt Lake Ci...

Re: The Plot

Re effective ranges for 8in guns, it would be interesting to know how WW defined "effective range". Not to put words in the man's mouth, but it is possible he was referring to maximum realistic engagement range. The Admiralty deemed 8in effective range for opening fire to be approx 17k yar...

Re: The Plot

Let us please be serious here: 20k+ yards is not "effective range" for an 8in gun cruiser battery. In rough ballistic terms (assuming more or less equal FC efficiency), that is equivalent to saying that the "effective range" of a battleship caliber main battery is 25k+ yards. B
