Re: Prince Eugane v AGS

The undoing of the lone warship raider concept was the rise of naval air power during the war. This occurred post 1940. However, in the 1930's naval air power (as well as submarines) remained unproven. And the fact that aircraft carriers were such a political football for all the powers in the inte...

Re: Prince Eugane v AGS

The mistake is to think that Hitler and Raeder knew (or should know) what would be the (naval) war. Raeder made long-term plans. If they had guessed what the (naval) war would be, they would not have started it. Lack of experience aside, it was painfully clear that the Kriegsmarine could only wage ...

Re: Prince Eugane v AGS

International politics were too unstable. Hitler's plans were constantly changing. Scharnhorst and Genisenau were initially "pocket battleships" and were modified after the construction of the Dunkerque class. The reason was that Dunkerque was a superior warship over "pocket battlesh...

Re: Prince Eugane v AGS

KM didn't care too much about treaty obligations , but Hitler did. In most respects he was a bigger problem for KM rearmamewnt than the RN was. Don't forget that the Z Plan was pushed for by Hitler. Z-PLAN was too little to late and seems Hitler's way of smoothing over with Raeder after Hitler's be...

Re: Prince Eugane v AGS

Hi all Pocket battleships were super-heavy cruisers more stronger than heavy cruisers and more faster than "capital ships" (except battlecruisers) Pocket battleships were not a option after Dunkerque construction. Regards The above only works with Hitler in charge and his flawed '4 year p...

Personally I would drag all the cruisers to KM ports- remove all the turret/guns to be mounted along the Atlantic Wall, while I converted the cruiser hulls into escort carriers , to make up shortfall in this area.
Goering would never allow that to happen.

there would have be some deals made.

Re: The French fleet

Gentlemen, In your opinion, would Hitler and the German navy used the French fleet if it had not been all but destroyed, or would the French admirals have scuttled them first? Hitler had an opportunity to force the French to hand over their fleet to the Germans at the armistice ceremony at Compiegn...

Re: May 24 1941 - Tirpitz v Prince of Wales

Hi Paul, do you know whether the German oil supply vessel were still present in Atlantic by 1941 fall, in order to support such a delayed operation ? Bye, Alberto Delcyros mentioned on WS-1 that supply ships were sent out weeks ahead of each sortie/operation and in-fact Admiral Raeder had planned t...

Best option was to postpone Rheinubung until the fall of 1941, which should give both BB to work to perfection both gunnery and flak.

Re: The Heinkel HE177

found this link for the HE-177A3, but it quotes two weights and don't' know enough German to know. https://ww2aircraft.net/forum/threads/he177-speed-and-climb.17209/ The lesser mass is 26 ton for a bomber with 16 tons empty & 31ton max. Bomb-load seems to 6-7 tons while max fuel is 13,500 L sugg...

As if this was not complicated enough following this site speed is effected by other variables as well http://www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org/mustang/mustangtest.html heres a some charts that show speed difference just with weapons racks is - 10 to -13mph, while difference in fuel grade can drop spe...

Re: The Heinkel HE177

thanks for the correction on ordnance & ordinance . Speed at altitude figures for fighters are well known- but they all feature a "chevron" graph covering speed vs altitude. so for all aircraft - top speed depends on altitude and various add-ons like supercharger and fuel quality and e...
