There was also the magazine (admitedly a secondary magazine) hit on Jean Bart. A double lucky hit in a way. Lucky that it hit the magazine and lucky that there wasn't any ammo in the magazine (although you could argue that).

IN MY OPINION THE BISMARCK WAS NOT LUCKY AT ALL THE HOOD WAS A OLD SHIP BISMARCK WAS ALL NEW As explainded later Bismark hitting and seriously damaging Hood given that she was the primary target is pretty much expected and not what I would call lucky. However Bismark sinking Hood so quickly was ver...

Just looking at the Nsquared law will show you that two lesser but close ships will usually beat one equal or better. Note that I did not say Bismark ended up sunk most of the time. However even if Hood never hits Bismark if she isn't sunk quickly then POW has time to do plenty of damage while Hood ...

Had it only been once one could make a case for it. However the New Jersey and Iowa repeatedly straddled in some cases with 3 gun salvoes. Hard to claim that's luck.

I´m a little bit tired about this thing of the "lucky" Bismarck argument. But no, it wasn´t about luck. She hit and destroyed Hood because that was the result of:.s... The fact that you are tired of it doesn't make it less true. The probabilty of hitting Hood in a place that would cause a...

But what was proven? To my way of thinking the main things that were proven was that:
a) She was lucky in her first battle.
b) She was unlucky in her last.
c) Her upperworks could take a lot of damage without her sinking.

Actually means can be a pretty poor way of doing so. They tend to give excessive weight to etreme values. Modes or medians are often better choices. Of course it depends on what you want your value to represent. When you say "max range" for instance do you want the absoulte max range or th...

Here's an article which addresses your question. http://www.uic.com.au/nip32.htm From that article: The USA has the main navy with nuclear-powered aircraft carriers (11), while both it and Russia have had nuclear-powered cruisers (USA: 9, Russia 4). Russia has eight nuclear icebreakers in service. T...

Perhaps I'm using the wrong terminology. It has been 25 years since I've had much to do with radar and that was a modern set. We had PPI style scopes that you could center on a target. I assumed that this is what they were doing focusing in on the target so the view showed it and the splashes in an ...

We don't have enough primary data on Japanese radars to draw firm conclusions about the designs, the type of data processing, or their capabilities. That's a bit of an overstatement. Pictures give a pretty good idea of the size and construction of their antenas. There is I believe some pretty good ...

Looking at this some more. Looks like even the best British BB's would have a problem engageing at much over 20,000 yards where even the German heavy cruisers could engage and hit at well over that (Eugen and Spee both demostrated this in combat). The British need to either do something to get the G...

The only chance Alaska has vs either of these two is to stay at very long range and hope to get hits while avoiding the same. If the range drops much under 30,000 yards Alaska is in serious trouble (unless it's at night or fog or some such). In most cases Id put my money on Dunkurque. In a knife fig...
