I'm not following your logic. If the problem is caused by heavy ship front end , meaning the front rides too low in the water, surely lightning up the front should reverse that problem?

At what sea state does this problem occur with S & G and Bismarck?

I've heard that 'breakwaters' mounted on the bow ahead of the guns ,are sometimes employed to solve these types of problems. Could that have worked for Bismarck?

So how drastic a solution would you need to go to, in order to resolve that problem... without range finders guns can't shoot? With S&G if you removed the front A turret and plated over the deck with maybe a twin 6" turret or couple of flak batteries....would that have solved the 'wet probl...

Re: George Elder

Paul L: Sounds good to me! I have toyed with a simplistic formula involving spaced armor effects. It seems to work well with smaller projectiles & APFSDS. The net additional resistance of a given spaced plate is t/d [spaced plate] ^0.5 * Penetrator velocity at impact. Plate hardness would incre...

Re: Interesting

You noted: UK had side screens since WW-II and I know an all round spaced armor was tested on the centurion. But against large shaped charges it didn't help enough to justifie the expense. How did this array work against AP and APC shells? George No they just were testing a SS-10 ATGM warhead again...

Quick response, Tanks never had spaced armor until they needed them. Since the vast majority of the projectiles produced could be countered by more of the existing armor it makes sence not to change that procedure. Some have doctrins that prohibit the use, like the Americans who despite wide spread ...

All due respects Bill but you need to go back to school. Schutzen skirts were designed to defeat Soviet 14.5mm HVAP shot from the AT rifles...shaped charges were only in their infancy at that time and it was not connected until after the war. Poor american historical analyasis is responsible for thi...

Re: George Elder

Rich is correct in noting that it would be very difficult to work a spaced array into the typical confines of a BB turret given all that is contained within. However, the claim that spaced "arrays tend to be less effective than single plates of the same total thickness" is very problemati...

Re: Turret Armor

It was common in many battleships to have very thick back plates, not for protection, but to counter-balance heavy weights at the front of the turret--the guns, trunnions, etc. Since I read Dr Elders paper on spaced armor , I always assumed WW-II ships had spaced armor. I think that the side plan v...

Thanks! I have some other questions but for now , can any one tell me how heavy the 11" gun turrets on the Scharnhorst and Graff Spee were?
Does any one know what the weights of the 8" gun turrets on the Hipper class were?

When I read in the website I posted above, I see the date the keel of the ship was laid down and the date of launch then date of commission. I was wondering how much time goes into designing these massive ships before a single yard of steel is laid down? Is it a matter of years?

Erich Gröner's Die Deutschen Kriegschiffe states the cost of Bismarck as being RM 196,8 million; Tirpitz is listed as RM181,6 million. I would presume this is the cost of the completed ship with armour and weapons. Yard estimates would not normally inlude weapons, except for installaion costs acrue...

The actual Blohm+Voss yard bill (see copy at John Asmussen: http://www.bismarck-class.dk/bismarck/miscellaneous/bismarck_birth_place/bismarck_birth_place.html) for the Bismarck was 71,642,000 million Reichsmark in 1941. That is the construction price and probably does not include any of the enormou...

Re: Cost of Bismarck and Tirpitz

http://www.bismarck-class.dk/bismarck/miscellaneous/bismarck_birth_place/bismarck_birth_place.html According to this site 71.6 million RM for the Bismarck. I wonder if the Tirpitz was the same cost since it was built later? Found this other site and now I'm throughly confused :!: http://www.german-...
