Re: Forward mainmast? Really?

The old sailors were slow to realize the massive difference between, say, HMS Victory and HMS Prince of Wales. As they were likely the ones to approve designs the old ways lived on.

Re: Forward mainmast? Really?

Read Horatio Hornblower in middle school. Tough read for a Indiana boy. Strained a few librarians in the process.

Re: Carrier SOP

The SOP for GQ on a carrier would be a rather large document. Some things common to all warships, some things specific to a type. Battle stations may or may not be specific to a person's rating. I was in Repair 3 (zone for after part of cruiser), Main Engine Space (when I got my "crow") an...

Re: Carrier SOP

Sidebar: The Special Attack units, aka Kamikazes, counted their successes in a problematic way. Special Attack (SA) planes are escorted to their target area by Observer Planes (OP). They have orders to attack carriers first. Obviously the SA guys couldn't report back. The success tally was produced ...

Re: Carrier SOP

I don't know about Lady Lex, but having airplanes loaded with fuel during an attack would seem to be risky. I guess it might be the same response we'd get from the question "How fast can you run?" "Depends on how scared I am."

Look into "The Big Blue Blanket".

Re: Carrier SOP

Sounding "General Quarters" would send everybody to their battle stations. I doubt there was a difference between surface and air GQ manning.

Re: How did dumb gate vessels work the boom gate?

Systems varied widely, commands had some flexibility as to what they develop. Net tenders could be used to operate the nets as well as repairing/inspecting them.

Re: How did dumb gate vessels work the boom gate?

Never worked on them, but a thought would be to have two motorized boats, one on either side of the boom. Both locked on near the end of the boom. One would be towed along with the gate when the other pulled it close in to the shore.

Re: When it comes to warships, bigger is usually better.

I don't understand why the Atlanta class being ordered for a second time, with fewer 5in guns makes them a success, when the same thing happened with the Dido class, but they were failures? Really? The USN promptly laid up the Atlanta class post war whilst the Didos served for decades post war. The...
