Re: Bismarck trapped
I think you forget something. POW can't open the range with Bismarck if she decides to pursue. POW speed decreased to 27 knots because of 600-tons flooding after underwater hits from Prinz Eugen. Bismarck on the other hand could make 28 knots. In fact Bismarck maintained a speed of 28 knots that mo...

Re: Bismarck trapped
Bismarck was flooding rapidly forward. When S&G faced similar flooding when steaming at high speed, they lost their FC connections in their main turrets. The Idea that Bismarck could pursue PoW and not lose some or all of her forward armament is false. A single 8" hit on PE could have doome...

Re: Bismarck trapped
dunmuro: Here's a track chart showing the positions of Suffolk and Norfolk. You can see that Norfolk was in a position to form up on PoW if Lutjens decided to pursue her, with his damaged and flooding Bismarck. But of course, Bismarck engaged both Cruisers and hit neither on several occasions. The ...

Re: Bismarck trapped
After Bismarck turns to pursue PoW her aft guns have no target. How? The cruisers dissapeared? In order to them to hurt PE they had to get in range. To do that they´ll be in Bismarck´s aft turrets range. Bye-bye! PoW was much better armored than Hood. According to Nathan Okun's tables, Bismarck's g...

Re: Bismarck trapped
Collingwood, Heidenreich and myself (Veenenberg) are all three convinced that after the Hood and serious damage to the PoW, the both triumphant German ships could have destroyed PoW if Lütjens only had fought on, disobeying his orders. That PoW had her bridge out, Y-turret (4 barrels) out only make...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato
I thought it was "common knowledge" that PoW's and Hood's ranging radars were intefering with each other and PoW was ordered to switch hers off. Also, that she switched it on after Hood exploded and was able to use it effectively. PoW's gunnery report is quite definite that no usable rada...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato
I thought PoW had FC radar. PoW did have type 284 and type 281, but neither set provided reliable ranging at DS and PoW's FC was conducted entirely by optical ranging. Both sets were functioning, apparently correctly, but the ranging data was unusable - the type 281 was reporting three KM targets, ...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato
After Hood blew up, Bismarck mearly had to shift her range downward by about 700 yds, and she was then right on target. PoW, OTOH, had to make a rapid turn to avoid Hood, and then began her turn away, and at the same time Bismarck also began a turn away, but the key factor was PE and her 8in guns an...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato
lwd: Bismarck, did not almost have "a KGV for breakfast", and if we replaced the PoW, with the more combat ready KGV and her fully functioning radar systems and main armament, it would have been KGV that had Bismarck for breakfast. If we replace PoW with CVN 65 then you can also have an a...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato
I have a question about the filler in the RN 14" shell. The weight (48.5) is about the same as the US 14" HC filler, and the US 14" is about the same weight. Are you sure that is not the weight of the RN HC filler? Because if it isn't, the walls of that AP shell must be awfully thin....

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato
I don't think the British 14" shell was ever proofed against a 16" belt at whatever angle Yamato's belt was. My personal expectation is if the velocity was high enough to achieve "table" penetration it would actually shatter or deform and fail to penetrate. That is a possibility...

Re: Two KGV's vs. Yamato
legend: Now, that means the two KGV's need to be at long range to kill Yamato. That means that the accuracy will be lowered bacause of range and shells splashing from both ships, and increased because of large numbers of said shells, like 24 shells a minute. Almost impossible, if not totally imposi...
