Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Hello everybody, of course and Colin McMullen was firing ( please just look at the PoW gunnery plot Bismarck course track ) exactly at a ship ( Bismarck ) that was following the Prinz Eugen ( as showed on her correct track map ) and by Schmitz-Westerholt print ( both there outside looking at this b...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

Hello everybody, there has been long time ago a wide consensus ( apart Robert Winklareth and Vic Dale ) on the battle main parameters re-construction using both sides well know data. At that time we had only the German tracks ( in particular the Bismarck one ) to be correctly re-constructed and sho...

Re: Bismarck firing procedures at DS

I'd actually take all records with a grain of salt mainly because these are battle conditions; humans are prone to extreme stress during such conditions and minute details, like the exact time aren't of relevance at the time. I singled out question 42 as I found it very interesting, PoW's records m...

Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

Its wort pointing out that both classes of British battleships and designed after Jutland suffered from turret issues due to over complicated interlocks (Not including Vanguard as the turrets, though reworked, were nonetheless based on a pre Jutland design Nelson and Rodney had some real issues with...

Re: KGV + PoW

. The simple answer is "yes". The Admiralty considered a KGV capable of taking on the Tirpitz. Their pre-war ideas ALWAYS envisaged having more ships versus a foe, it was based on the advantages of "concentration" to achieve overwhelming victories. So two "fast battleships&...

Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

An observation. This battle took place before automation of loading was achieved in the likes of the US "Des Moines" class (which were post war 8 inch cruisers). From some of the figures provided previously there is a drop off in efficiency in firing as an action progresses. This is unders...

Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

Hi Dunmunro Having just listened to the first and second reels (very interesting) McMullen in the first reel repeatedly uses the word "vast" in regard to the problems with the turrets which were "untried" and that the first 2 suffered "vast mechanical teething troubles"...

I have lost all respect for you both.

Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

A question about McMullens statement "the guns are ok"... Do you think its possible that he was talking about himself and the rest of the gunnery team in the director? Ive read several accounts of Royal Navy actions and operations plus also the more mundane day to day stuff. And I'm sure t...

Re: KGV and PoW GAR during Op. Rheinubung

For what it is worth, having studied this particular subject for years, I have always felt that POW's gunnery during Denmark Strait was indeed rather poor. In the USN, anybody who fired as many ranging salvos without crossing the target would have been heavily criticized. After getting on for line,...

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

Hi Again, Just an after thought, in fact the RN were pulling in heavy units from all over the place, besides Ark Royal and her torpedo carrying Swordfish, after KGV and Rodney had withdrawn even an old 'R' class, QE, or Renown could have finished her off. Hi Paul, I suspect that Ark Royal would hav...

Re: What if Bismarck hit Rodney early on?

Agree, She wasn't going anywhere once her rudders were shot. HMS Ark Royal was still on hand if required and if KGV and Rodney did have to go the RN would have found something else from somewhere. HMS Rodney, despite her desperate need for a refit was still a tough old boot. That she suffered self i...
