Re: British in Afghanistan, 1800s.

Re: Speed of laying a minefield in enemy waters
And they did lay mines at 40 kt...? You lay mines in enemy waters. If you wish to dawdle while doing that be my guest, but leave me on the pier. Swarm in, lay mines, depart. While you're in range of the enemy coastal guns you're in danger. You have an unreasonably large amount of go-bangs for your ...

British in Afghanistan, 1800s.
I digitized some British documents covering their adventures in the 'Stan back in the 1800s. Fascinating reading for those interested in deep background. https://www.history.navy.mil/content/history/nhhc/research/library/online-reading-room/title-list-alphabetically/a/afghan-wars-1839-42-and-1878-80...

Re: The Day After Tomorrow ship
I manned the main spaces in carriers and smaller warships. They weren't simple. That tanker probably has diesel-electric drives, again not simple. IF the ship drifted out into the open ocean it might have made it to more clement climes. But the Gulf Stream would have driven it over to northern Europ...

Re: Maus tank
There were any number of bridges in Europe that it couldn't cross without crashing the structure, so it couldn't easily pick its battlefield. An M1A2 could run rings around it. The M1's APSD rounds would brutalize it. Shall we go on?

https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref/AirGunnery/index.html At one point the manual reminds the student that the .50 cal. is lethal at 4 miles. The kill zone for the .30 cal. is considerably shorter. (And yes, four miles would not be an aimed shot. I tried that once, got probables at one mile, no...
