Re: Reports by British Office of Naval Intelligence about the German Navy 1917

The wife says "thanks". If I'm busy she doesn't have to deal with complaints about me running the street, peeing on car tires, and barking at the neighbors. :ok:

Re: Secundary guns turrets

The Park Service survey is online. I helped teach the Pearl Harbor attack module at Purdue, under Prof. Randy Roberts. I was asked why the bodies weren't removed from the wreck. "Well, besides the ghoulishness of the task you have to remember that a shit load of powder went off in a confined sp...

Re: Secondary guns turrets

Anybody know of a good analysis of Arizona's cataclysmic explosion? Did the US Parks Service do any such or did they just survey the wreckage?

Re: Secundary guns turrets

Re: Secundary guns turrets

I was under the impression that there were "flash blockers" in the line of ammo from storage to gun deck. They opened upward and the shell passed through, then they closed. I've seen this in operation at least once, but lordy, that was 30+ years ago. Ready to say "Oops".

Re: Naval communications in WWII

DERAIL-ON My favorite TBS message, when I was still in high school, was sent by RAdm. Willis "Ching" Lee during a bit of a disagreement in the Solomons. Night action, "sound and fury signifying nothing" abounds. Then the USN hears this: "This is Ching Lee in Washington and I...

Firing #3 over #2 sounds like fun. Too bad I have a root canal scheduled for that day, darn it.

Re: The Hold

I've watched people load grain into the holds on a ship next to us in Singapore. The pallets were hoisted into the hold and the workers pulled them off the pallet and stowed them. The pallet went out when unloaded and the crane picked up another one. (The things you'll watch when you're on duty and...

Re: Crew Exhaustion a factor in final battle?

Based on my own twenty years active duty I can picture them standing down whenever possible to allow for crew rest. I've slept on steel decks more than once. It does get tiring but 20 minutes shut-eye can work wonders. Or it can convince you that life at sea during war time isn't your cup of tea.
