Re: Fast Battleship League Table

Its my opinion that Yamatos guns could overmatch the sideprotection of Littorio.

The thickness of the decapping plate could be insufficent against this shell.

Remember the german indication was approx 20% of caliber thickness.
I think we have a borderline case.

Re: Fast Battleship League Table

with regard to german radar for italian ships. The Germans as far as the available documents provide, never intended to give Feinpeilung and Messkette to the Italians;-->only the basic device. the german specialist wich visited the italian ships for preparation of installation of german Funkmess con...

Re: Yamato 46cm overmatches Tirpitz side protection?

As to the overmatch: At 10km vs. Yamato’s projectiles had a 6° angle of fall. At 5° Tirpitz side protection, the 320mm belt + 120mm scarp @ 68° from vertical + 45mm torpedo bulkhead, gave a LOS thickness of 631mm acc. Thorsten Wahl. A spaced array type protection is strongly dependend on adjustment...

Tirpitz vs. Yamato daytime March 1942

Im not sure if protection of Tirpitz may be overmatched by the sheer size of Yamatos projectiles.

if they do then Tipitz is in grave danger

Re: Fast Battleship League Table

Underwater travel of armour piercing shell was also subject of german ballistic research already before the First World War. they found abnormalities in the hitdistrubution on the target depending on angle of waterentry. German WW1 shells typically skipped from the water surface at angles below 15 d...

Re: Fast Battleship League Table

another comment no ship would attack at all costs. in a battle against other ships every ship may have a comfortable zone, with regard to own weapons effect and own capability to withstand damage. the own capability to deal damage strongly depends on firecontrol facilities. Maybe ships with more ind...

Re: Gun precision / dispersion

Most excellent! Thank you Thorsten! So the 28.7 km tracking range on Scharnhorst were done using the new TS6 diodes. But because of a wrong cooling installation the performance of the new sender was downgraded to the performance of the old sender (with TS1?). makes sense. i will compile the Funkmes...

https://www.kbismarck.org/forum/download/file.php?id=464 Usually the distance was measured by several optical rangfinders. From these measurings a averaged value was taken for calculation of the firing solution. Seetakts were almost invariably nearer to this average value as each single measurement...

Re: Fast Battleship League Table

With regard to performance of US shells versus horizontal armour plate. USN fire effect tables were based on Thompson F-formula.

BUT,

Thompson F-formula overestimates projectile performance at high oblique impacts by a fairly high margin, typically by about 10-15%.
