Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
Hello Mr. Nilsson, you write: 'The first series is unit 1-31. That should be FuMG 39G (in case of Bismarck FuMO 23). It is almost confirmed Bismarck got unit 11 and 17 (the third one remains unclear). The first technical change was made in unit 32 and following (FuMG 40G?= FuMO 27). The whereabouts...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
The crucial question is: What's the difference between FuMO 23 and 27 at all?
- 2000 Hz vs 500 Hz?
- No "Feinpeil" vs "Feinpeil"?
- TS1 tube vs TS9 tube?

Re: Shells fired by Prinz Eugen
Thank you for your replies! The magazines weren't full when they left Norway? "Verschuss" implies the shells were really shot. In my opinion it's unlikely PG wasn't fully equipped. The fact that 8 + 155 = 163 seems significant. I suspect that there was a typo in the M.A.Za. report and/or t...

Shells fired by Prinz Eugen
There is a discrepancy between Jasper's GAR and the request for topping up the shells.
KTB May, 24th 1942
M.A.Za. (Marineartilleriezeugamt Brest ~ Naval Artillery Arsenal Brest) June, 7th 1941
Any thoughts?

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
Bismarck and Tirpitz were different. Bismarck's specific consumption was rising again beyond a certain WPS-rate, but Tirpitz' specific consumption (as a function of WPS) was always decreasing.

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
Prinz Eugen got radar sets from the first series (No. 10 foretop and No. 15 aft).

It's just a matter of a good memory, patience, opportunity, luck and unfortunately a whole lot of money.

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
Hello Mr. Nilsson, really impressive for Tirpitz, many thanks. One thing I can't understand is why Hood is "limited" to 27,5 kn (even in May 1941, at operational displacement, she did 29 kn for long time so that it was difficult for PoW to keep up): I would have expected a comparison of t...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
What I find really interesting is the top speed officially reported for Tirpitz at 31.7 kn (I had never heard about that): impressive result for such a large, 3 shafts ship. Is your source reporting the date when this speed was recorded ? Can you please share the name of the document ? Unfortunatel...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
In regard of the Denmark Straits footage frame rate: It's very unusal to stick out the tongue like Jasper?? does. The footage was filmed on 35mm with an Arriflex 35. The standard frame rate was 24 fps, but Lagemann's camera already had the adjusting knob for 18-30 fps. My DVD-version apparently has ...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
Thank you Herr Nilsson for the information about the restricted rate of fire. Can you explain how the rate was restricted? Best regards Frank The rate of fire depends on the interplay of several work flows. The bottlenecks are: the shell hoist cage, the cartridge ring car and the shell ring car. Th...

Re: Was the battleship Bismarck really the best of its time?
Hello Mr. Nilsson, thanks, do you have any information about 'possible limit' of burners actually reached during Bismarck's or Tirpitz's trials ? As said, a less efficient fuel consumption at high powers would have affected range, not necessarily speed. During trials, Gneisenau reached only 30.7 kn...
