It's beginning to look that way.

Re: How close was the final battle?

Are you under the impression that Bismarck had only one fire control position? There were in fact three, although the Baron states in his book that the one over the conning tower seems to have been used only as a shelter. Because morale was so bad, I suppose. The aft position was manned by the Baro...

Re: How close was the final battle?

They didn't have blind fire in those days. Radar bearings weren't accurate enough. FC still relied on visual bearings. The British weren't stupid, as you imply. They opened fire when they thought there was a good chance to obtain hits. There were real human beings manning those ships, and as Bill J ...

A compass "repeater" would require 20th century electrical systems.

It would also appear that the capstain is useless, considering how high the spokes would be. I think some liberties were taken with this model.

Re: imaginary encounter

Interesting that 14"/50 is considered of no consequence against Bismarck, and yet PoW seems to have done damage of consequence with fewer, less powerful guns.

Re: Prince of Wales in front

Didn't the formation leader traditionally lead the formation in the RN? Under the circumstances, especially knowing that PoW had a green crew, Holland might very well have felt that he would look like a coward if he switched places with the newer ship.

I've been in Red Hill, the underground fuel depot. Fascinating and a bit spooky.

Re: Why no turtleback?

HI. I do not understand this, why a higher armoured deck means a shorter belt? The belt has to protect the sides of magazines as well as the machinery, what you said only makes sense if the machinery space is shorter due to being higher, but that would mean it protruding above the water line, what ...

The complete turrets were emplaced on Oahu.

Also, the 8" turrets from Lexington or Saratoga were placed to augment Oahu's defenses.

Re: Midway question!

I don't think Japanese torpedo planes were capable of dive bombing. Their training for ship attack involved using torpedoes and their bomb attacks on airfields weren't considered appropriate for attacking ships. Kind of like using a TBM to bomb a ship. You can do it, but it's not the best way to sin...

And of course in the KGVs they went to a thick armored deck which met the top of the belt.

Re: Buzzed by Russian jets

I'm under the impression that US CVNs do get buzzed by foreign aircraft, and there isn't much you can do about it in peacetime. Obviously someone starting a war is going to get some "free" hits under those circumstances, and I think that is something we just live with. The "heads up&q...
