Re: Bismarck's fate.

Bismarck machinery could still do 20 knots after the torpedo hit . they choose to steam at 7 knots becasue there was no point of going faster since they were heading west away from France. at 7-10 knots the fuel comsuption is very low. if they had fixed the steering, I think they could make it to Fr...

Re: Bismarck's fate.

may have taken some time to figure things out but without the British I think they would have eventually made it to France. unfortunalety for them time is something they didnt have.
without enemy harassing fuel wouldnt be a problem either as long as they steam at low speeds 10-15 kntos.

Re: Bismarck and PE fuel transfer

Dave, logic tells me that the large ship, Bismarck, should refuel the smaller one, PE, but I understand that in case of tankers then the ship that is being refueled would normally be placed behind the tanker. and that is my confusion. but what you said makes sense to me. thanks.

Re: Germany keeps all it's fleet after WW1

it would be more credible scenario for example if Germany were allowed to retain a navy with a strenght like the French or Italian under the Washington Treaty. scrap the older ships and retain the newest up to 175,000 tons. the US and UK keep the lead with 525,000 tons and Japan 315,000 tons. for th...

Re: Germany keeps all it's fleet after WW1

well, well, well, if Germany keeps all its fleet after WW1 and modernizes some ships in the 30s I think they have a good chance of launching Sea Lion.

Re: Costa Concordia capsizes off the coast of Italy

Ken I thought it was over 100,000 tons at first too but I looked further and that is Gross tonnage that meassures ship overall internal volume, but the weight of the ship is like Titanic. both ships have +/- the same displacement but Costa Concordia looks bigger because has twice volume of Titanic. ...

Re: Costa Concordia capsizes off the coast of Italy

The one saving grace - and no comfort really to the famillies of those lost - is that the death toll was nothing like that from the Titanic, to which this disaster has been compared by the more populist media. one thing can be compared both had about the same displacement: Titanic 52.000 and C.Conc...

Re: Costa Concordia capsizes off the coast of Italy

one thing I dont really understand is, if the damage is on the port side why is the ship resting over its starboard side?
... and considering the low depth of the water, could the crew try counterflooding so the ship sank vertically.

Bismarck pasive radar FuMB

hello,
did Bismarck have pasive radar FuMB ?? to receive pulses from enemy active radars?
the absence of it could explain why Lütjens thought Bismarck was still shadowed on 25 May wehn contact had really been broken.
any thoughts?
