Re: The surrender of the High Seas Fleet remembered
Or perhaps most likely the assumption that the Germans wouldn't do anything - the indiscipline and lack of pride in their uniforms of the naval crews following the Kiel naval mutinies gave the impression that the German fleet was no longer a capable military force, not even in sinking their own ships.

Re: How close was the final battle?
In Denmark Strait, with a perfectly controllable ship, she hit Hood with one out of 24 shells fired (?, 6 salvos of 4 guns?), what gives a standard 5% hit rate. Regards There were three hits that we know about - one on the third salvo starting/adding to the fire on the midships section immediately ...

I think that is the crux of the matter.paul.mercer wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 4:42 pm
The facts are that had Bismarck not taken a hit in her rudder I don't think any of the RN ships would have got near her

Re: What ship lost carrying 100 kW Transmitter to Singapore
Best shot would be to go to the Marconi museum archives and try to find out what records are there regarding transhipment of the radio, once the contracted ship name is identified it can be looked up in the Lloyds shipping registry (assuming the ship was British). Hi RF, thank you for this, I've no...

Sounds to me as being sunk by a U-boat in the Atlantic.Fatboy Coxy wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 8:40 pm ..... but it was lost at sea when the supply ship was torpedoed and sunk".
Automedon was sunk by scuttling charges not torpedo after being thoroughly looted by the Atlantis, any capture of a radio would have been documented.

Re: What ship lost carrying 100 kW Transmitter to Singapore
Where is the information about this transmitter being transported coming from? The Alfred Holt ship Automedon was captured by KMS Atlantis in the Indian Ocean on 11 November 1940 along with its secret mails addressed to the C in C Singapore, however no mention made of a radio transmitter, if this is...

Re: HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL
May 2023 usher in a return to sanity in our chaotic world. Byron We can wish it but sadly I can't see things happening at all. There seems little incentive to do so, if you take the Ukraine war as a yardstick there are no moves to end it, no prospect of negotiatons. The stalemate will drag on. As U...

Re: Operation Weserübung - why
Yes, there is a danger of going off thread, however the issues in my previous post do directly relate to the Norwegian campaign. With respect to Marschall, yes again it is easy to speculate. However Renown quickly degraded Gneisenau's gunnery and with Admiral Whitworth having some 12 destroyers in c...

Re: Operation Weserübung - why
For a''liberal democracy'' where defence is aimed at deterring attack, securing the Baltic would be a reasonable objective for a Weimar Germany. However we are not dealing with the reasonable, here we have an aggressive expansionist military power consumed with an ideology bent on racial supremacy a...

Re: Operation Weserübung - why
Back at Narvik, Haarr is very critical that Bey did not try to get some of his ships away before Warspite and co arrived and wiped them out. There is another aspect to this - a couple of torpedo hits on Warspite and that battle is transformed - though this is with hindsight with ten destroyers avai...

Re: Operation Weserübung - why
Considering the tools at hand, I think the Norwegians did well. Strictly my opinion, of course. Byron With a more modern torpedo battery with more torpedoes the whole operation up Oslo Fjord could have been scuppered - the big guns would not be needed, judicious firing from the torpedo battery coul...
