Re: Washington Treaty & its effects

I don't think the PZs were made to comply to the WT - but rather to deal with it . Good point and well put! But back to the treaty. What about the much touted putative Pacific naval arms race that supposedly would have continued between the US and Japan if the treaty had not been? Would economic re...

Re: Battleship speed

But then again, the RN didn´t experienced a pressing need to do so for they were well established in the battlecruiser aspect. There was nothing comparable to that in France, Italy or the USN while Japan´s KONGO´s would have been at a severe disadvantage to HOOD, RENOWN, REPULSE and TIGER. How do y...

Re: Yamato turret rotation time?

4-5 degrees per second is typical for turrets on other battleships, so 2 degrees per second seems slowish. Edit: Though it is very seldom you have to switch target from one side of the sip to the other, so this is not much of a problem in practice. Actually, elevating speed is more important and oft...

Re: Armor of the Admiral Hipper class cruisers

Looking at the line drawings in "Die Deutschen Kriegsschiffe 1815 - 1945" it appears that the "unidentified square thing" is depicted there on Admiral Hipper. It is a bit hard to tell, as the drawings are above water, but there is a square at the right location. Moreover, both th...

Re: Bismarck Survey

That was fun. I guess the answers you will get on this forum might not be representative of the general public though. I think a couple of the questions were a bit too much of two extremes in the alternatives. For example: What kind of threat did Bismarck pose to shipping lanes in the Atlantic? * Ma...

Re: Jutland recurrent themes

All that needs to be said about Tarrant is that he quotes, without quotation marks or attribution, a whole portion of Marder's conclusion about Jutland from "From the Dreadnought to Scapa Flow" Volume III Second Edition. Not very original. I'll stick with the stuff in English from the arc...

Re: Jutland recurrent themes

That is correct, Tarrant is not so much German perspective as one might think from the title. It does use German sources more than most other books. IMHO it is one of the best general histories of the battle, and it has excellent maps. It also passes the standard test for naval histories: It has pos...

Re: Jutland recurrent themes

The best book on the battle aviable still remains to be: J.Campbell, Jutland, An Analysis of the Fighting I agree! Tarrant's "Jutland - The German Perspective" is also good, and not all abot the Germans. Castles of Steel is a good read, but contains a number of errors and sweeping stateme...

Dreadnoughts sunk by gunfire alone?

Except for cases where a ship has suffered a major explosion, I cannot think of any cases where a dreadnought (Battleship or Battlecruiser) has been sunk by gunfire alone. There is the possible case of the Lützow, but there is apparently many who think she was hit by a torpedo. But apart from that?

Battle of Dover straits 1916 and 1917

Does anyone know of an OOB for the forces involved in these two battles? I am doing a scenario for a naval game.

Re: The sinking of Scharnhost

Just speculating here, but a boiler explosion would hardly have the force to blow off part of the ship, and it seems improbable it would blow of the bows. An ammo explosion seems more likely. Explosions on sinking ships are not uncommon, compare for example with Barham. OTOH the forward turrets of t...

Re: Was the Blücher really such a bad design?

My question would be ''what exactly is the role of the Blucher?'' If the role, as it should be, is to engage cruisers then it would seem admirably suited. I imagine that the role would have been to engage enemy cruisers. As the battlecruiser was not (publicly) invented when the Blücher was designed...

Re: German heavy ships

Italy in 1940 was a complete paper tiger. I think Il Duce knew that. He supposedly said in an interview that "The difference between me and the Fuhrer is that I am a first rate leader of a second class nation, while with the Fuhrer and Germany it is the other way around". Not sure I got t...

Re: Was the Blücher really such a bad design?

There was nothing wrong with Blucher as an armoured cruiser, although if you look at the direction armoured cruiser evolution was taking he was always going to be a second class ship compared to foreign ships. Could you expand on that? What foreign armoured cruisers make Blücher into a second class...
