Re: 2 questions regarding Bismarck

............ Say it's what I meant to do all along, and try for a propaganda win. Interesting point, how did the German propaganda machine deal with the ups and down of the "episode" ? In one sense the British had an easier task, defeat then victory is a stirring story to tell. Does anyon...

Re: 2 questions regarding Bismarck

. It would be interesting to know what Lutjens knew (or thought he knew) about the strength and disposition of the Home Fleet - and IF or WHEN he found out that the second ship was POW and not KGV. The fact that Bismarck had been found so easily must have disturbed him and part of his decision must ...

Re: Yamato: the greatest warship of all times

. It is interesting that much is made ONLY of USN v. IJN experience. As noted, other experience could be very different. Not only U-Boats and better equiped aircraft, but coastal defences (e.g. mines) and "new" weapons (Fritz-X, Highball) and night/poor weather attacks with/without electro...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers

. LWD, You are using the USN's idea of an "ideal" TDS (only "ideal" up to a certain charge weight) and ignoring different side protection system details and terminology. Am I? Seems I've read here that both the RN and the KM designed their TDS to deal with certain weight charges...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers

. LWD, You are using the USN's idea of an "ideal" TDS (only "ideal" up to a certain charge weight) and ignoring different side protection system details and terminology. NOT everyone thought the same way as the USN and the USN's was NOT the only "right" (or wrong) way o...

Re: Portholes in the hull

. In the RN, scuttles had covers. Early in the war (??? May 1940 ???) it was instructed that all scuttles be first sealed and then, when possible, welded over. A couple of months later the instruction was amended to make sure that each compartment had a scuttle with an opening cover that could be us...

Obviously you would need to back that statement up.

So, the points are NOT "clearly dealt with". you merely make claims without substantiation and which ignore the Naval High Commands lack of action.

Thank-you.

Please (yet again) point out where these "points are clearly dealt with" in your posts.

I did not call you an apologist, I stated that you were merely parroting them.

Re: German heavy ships

. You, and LWD, have NOT put forward any reasoned analysis, you have merely parroted the apologists skimming over of history. You have ignored Italian agression over the course of the 30s and seem to think that a Naval High Command doesn't need to think or act professionally and that they should exi...

Re: German heavy ships

. RF First post :- oh dear - by just quoting "strange ideas" without the argument you show that you are squirming - strange indeed. 1: You now seem to imagine a Naval High Command can pretend to work to a defensive philosophy, whilst their country, both politically and militarily, acts off...

Re: German heavy ships

. LWD, 1: You have yet to supply details, I HAVE supplied details of the RN's Fleet Commander's actions and the LACK of action from the Italian Naval High Command. Hence your comment could not be more wrong. 2: Running away from your idea that a naval staff shouldn't plan if they think they might lo...

Re: German heavy ships

. RF Strange ideas. 1: Your idea seems to be that it is o.k. to ignore Italian agressive rhetoric and actions (including two invasions and allying with Germany) - but claim they were somehow in a defensive mode. How are two invasions and allying oneself with another openly agressive, militaristic co...
