If one of the rudders was working, steering astern by the Hessen system where two screws going astern and one screw ahead in order to neutralize the rudder effect may be a viable option. Not sure about the weather involved and resulting speed would be very low.

The barbettes had enough diamater but new turrets had to be designed for proper ammunition handling in the more confined spaces below.

I´m afraid, I don´t know all the details but I tend to believe the design process has to be seen in light of earlier MAN ship Diesel applications, f.e. the KÖNIGSBERG class light cruisers center shaft Diesels (1927) and 1910 to 1919 projects.

That is correct. Top speed and endurance were improved with Diesel engines. SMS SACHSEN´s rated design speed was 22.25 kts, which would translate to in between 24.0 and 25.0 kts trial under peacetime trial conditions. I have a more hypothetical question. My reading is that the 200t of Diesel oil are for electrical power generation of the ship Diesels, not for main propulsion.
