Re: Loading big guns
Pure muscle work was deemed more reliable in those days, with good reason. The loaders would, I suspect, trade off jobs during a particularly long duel. Re: Optimum speeds for destroyers in gun battles
With more than a dozen contributors to Hyperwar I have no idea what's online there, but I did regularly ship copies of USN radar manuals to Brazil, they're still keeping that gear running down there. So a poke through might turn up a nugget or two.

Re: Optimum speeds for destroyers in gun battles
When qualifying as a coxswain on an LHA I learned of one maneuver, "Hog On Ice", that the "small boys" considered fun. My observation was that the entire crew was drunk.

Re: Various Q's regarding fire control tools
There may be more skunking around in Hyperwar. Nobody knows everything there. Adding "Hyperwar" to a Google search is frequently useful.

This might help. https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/re ... index.html Can't read it very well on a cell phone.

Re: Optimum speeds for destroyers in gun battles
"Knife fights" usually resulted from accidental proximity to the other force. The term "Speed is life" applies to surface actions as often as aerial combat. The insanely heroic charges of Taffy 3's escorts were done at the best possible speed, and so they lived a little longer. S...

Re: Broadsides
I think they would have installed "shock mountings" to reduce the shake, rattle and roll. I've see electronic units mounted on what are essentially rubber balloons, like a big hockey puck.

Re: Emergency hull repairs while at sea
In anticipation of such events as illustrated in my last post the outfitting parties would have tucked timber wherever it would fit. I was on USS MacDonough when we were in Gitmo for training. She had just come out of the yards and one of things done during a yard period is to check that we have eve...
