Re: The future of Europe
Join the EU or go into Islamic fundamentalism - frankly that is a matter for the Turks. Turkey should govern itself and should not be a problem for the British taxpayer to sort out. I want neither Britain or the EU as the world's policeman. Here we go again . You and your taxes , hey ? For an accou...

Re: The future of Europe
I shall be in Istanbul / Constantinople for a fortnights (first) visit from next Thursday 18th March . Having met a few Turks , including the ones from our local Kebab shop who hail from Trabzon (Trebizond/Trapezontas) up on the south coast of the black sea , I can assure all of you that they view w...

Re: Pressurised water jackets in magazine protection
you cant pressurise water , it is a (virtually) incompressible medium , the volume stays (virtually) the same no matter what the pressure . That makes it an excellent hydraulic fliud , and the fact that it cannot catch fire offsets its corrosive qualities , and this is why water was used as the hydr...

Re: Revisionist tendencies and Ambrose Sindrome
In an aside to the Lend-lease aid theme , I understand that many of the ships heading West across the Pacific were U S ones re-registered as Soviet ones and flying that flag , and sailed without escorts as "Neutrals" for Japan was not at war with Russia until the war's end in 1945 . The Ja...

Re: Any Research on the Fate of the Wreck of the Bismarck?
The Water-tight bulkheads do not go all the way up to the weather deck (the one you walk about on in the open air) in passenger carriers because it would be useless to have them this high . Firstly , any ship flooded to the weatherdeck in one or more hull spaces between these bulkheads is headed for...

Re: What is needed to replace the Battleship?
Is th heavy Industry around still to make the big guns ? Not in the UK , biggest thing they make here nowadays is a 155mm , it seems missiles are used for anything wanting more punch . And actually , though battleships guns have been used against shore targets frequently , they aren't actually OPTIM...

Re: Bismarck Paint storage
Ten cubic metres sounds fair , because although paint is heavier than water , it comes in cylindrical round tins of course and then you would have the "thinners" for washing the brushes "Kettles" to put it in to work from , the brushes , various other gear = maybe a store room do...

Re: Bismarck Paint storage
10.000 tons of paint ! Be a laugh if someone in the Kreigsmarine read the wrong line on the manufacturers list , and ordered " Peach Blossom " by mistake wouldn't it  ! ! ! I think those figures are extrapolations from square metres of area , multiplied by the manufacturers figures ...

Re: Casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan
The problem in the U K stems from about 20 years ago when Graduates with Qualifications suitable for careers in the Financial Sectors were relatively in short supply , pushing up the cost of hiring them . Our ( then Conservative ) Government decided to make many more , thus flooding the market and r...

Re: Admiral Zheng He (Cheng Ho) treasure ship design
Actually , Junks were divided up into WT compartments - well , not ones that you could put much of a pressure in , but then in the ordinary junks ( not the extreme , possibly make-believe ones that are the subject of the thread ) being a flat-bottomed and fairly shallow draught design , you wouldnt ...

Re: BRITISH AA OF WW2
The 3.7 was an army heavy AA weapon and the optimisation there has to include humping the thing about with manpower , towing it with standard trucks , supplying it with ammo from other trucks , not taking an age to emplace or remove it , and so on . None of those things need to be taken into account...

That is the present prediction , and I cant argue with that , for what you say makes sense , but it requires you to grant that things will pan out like that . Where we differ is over How much of the present alteration is ascribable to Mankinds actions , Whether the rate of change and all these sympt...

Re: Know any U.S. cities seeking USS JFK as museum ship?
The suggestion appears to be Camden, New Jersey. I've never heard of the place and the reference might be in jest. BB-62 is in Camden, which is a generally nasty town. Spoken like a true gentleman of the South sir ! I take it Camden is "The Home Of The Brave" then -- i.e. you'd have to be...

I dont quite understand this . Your Grandfather was Gunter Lutjens younger brother , and your grandfather left Germany in the 1900s ? or is that a typing error ? There were many Jewish and part Jewish officers in all the German services during the Kaisers war , the air ace Werner Voss comes immediat...
