Re: Best WW2 heavy cruiser = Prinz Eugen ?

Myself I am a fan of the Mogami's.

With 10x8" Guns and 12 long lance torpedo tubes they packed a wallop.

Re: Battle of the Coral Sea May 1942-An Overview

I might add the comparative losses of both sides in Coral Sea and the slow rate of Japanese pilot replacement was a foreboding of the future, a death spiral that Japanese Naval Aviation would never recover from.

Re: 40mm Bofors or 1.1" ?

Can't help you on which vessels carried the 1.1" weapons, Aurora. But I do think the changeover was well worth it. The Bofors had a better rate of fire, batter range, hit with a heavier shell so a better chance of destroying an aircraft. It also did not seem to have many of the reliability and ...

Re: Battle of the Coral Sea May 1942-An Overview

I always wondered why the IJN didn't redeploy Shokaku's airgroup to Zuikaku in order to have 5 fleet carriers present at Midway. With Zuikaku and ~ 65 warplanes (survivors from Coral Sea), the IJN would have had parity in aircraft numbers and would have had better chances of a stalemate at Midway, ...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

Thank you for jumping in. mostly harmless. You input is helpful and interesting. It's nice to have someone else posting instead of Alecsandros and I beating up on each other :D I think one of the biggest problems is "effective range" cannot and or is not defined in a quantifiable manner. W...

Yamato + Musahi - Damage taken

I've looked at the Various reports for the Damages taken by the Musahi and Yamato, specifically torpedo damage. The Yamato seems pretty well straight forward, not a lot of disagreement among sources, 10-12 torpedoes seems to be the situation. The Musahi though seems different, reports of 11 torpedo ...

Re: TERRORIST SHOOTING IN PARIS TODAY

Unfortunately these terrorists usually get what they want - what they want being media exposure. I wish there was a way to to give them the attention they desire but still report on the matter.

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

USN TM to Japan was a very serious project, while navweapons is a site built by enthusiasts, that is growing every day. When 2 sources are in stark disagreement you should use the primary one. First of all, the 2 sources are not in "stark disagreement". They way you are twisting the state...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

Obviously muzzle velocity is important, but there are a number of other factors. Of course, which is why I prefaced what I said regarding muzzle velocity with this - While it of course is not the only measure of potential range, with similar sized weapons it is indeed of importance. Obviously a lar...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

One thing also - look at the muzzle velocity of the 25mm. While it of course is not the only measure of potential range, with similar sized weapons it is indeed of importance. Obviously a larger shell does better as it has less surface area compared to mass, and there are aerodynamic issues with the...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

.. the USN TM to Japan has "AA ceiling less than 1000m", and "fire beyond that that range was completely ineffective". Your first quote seems to be very much an incomplete paraphrase. I've directly quoted the two sentences you are pulling from the US technical mission below. &qu...

Re: Increasing Bismarck's Armor By 50% Would Make a Differen

Yamato had an auxiliary rudder, but in testing it wasn't able to turn the ship.
Funny how much luck plays a role. Between them the Yamato and Musahi were hit by 30 or so torpedoes - and not one to my knowledge took the rudder out.

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

..... I'd venture that the real issue with the 25mm was that the IJN was never able to provide better than iron sights for it. Single mounts had iron sights. The triple mounts used the type 95 fire director. Not sure about the dual mounts, but most were single or triple. IIRC, the Yamato for instan...
