Re: Hitting the Gun Barrel

It happened to South Dakota, possibly more than once. At Santa Cruz https://www.navsource.org/archives/01/57a.htm has: “The ship received a direct hit from a 500-pound bomb on top of Main Battery Turret # 1. It did not penetrate but deformed two of the three 16-Inch barrels of #2 turret.” At the Sec...

Battleship for Freedonia

It is around 1936 and I have been appointed as Navy Minister by Freedonia. We are planning to build a battleship or class of battleships. As Freedonia has reasonably good relations with all the World's major naval powers, we are able to use technology from any country. We even have a few engineers w...

Convergence of unbuilt battleships

The H39 Battleships would have had a main armoured deck, MAD, of 120 mm over the magazines under an 80 mm armoured weather deck. They would have had a 100 mm MAD over the machinery under a 50 mm weather deck. Thus they are a natural evolution from Bismarck, following a similar philosophy. On the oth...

The Structural role of Main Armour Decks

Battleships were constructed as a girder of the keel, normally a double bottom, and the main armour deck (MAD). However, different navies constructed the MAD differently. The USN made their MADs as laminates. Thus, Iowa has a 4.75" upper layer on a 1.25" lower layer of homogeneous armour. ...

The range at which actions were fought

The designers of the last generation of battleships started with various expectations on the range at which their designs would exchange shells with other battleships, which was the reason why battleships were built rather than cruiser killers such as Scharnhorst or Alaska. I decided to survey what ...

Re: Political correctness gone mad?

Some way back in the thread I mentioned that politicians do not always act exactly as if they regarded climate change as a priority. Here are some good but now old quotations that I found at http://www.inference.org.uk/sustainable/book/tex/sewtha.pdf on page 222 from Tony Blair. Speaking on climate ...

...snip... Regarding sea level rise, we have not seen an acceleration in rate of sea level rise. It is still rising the same 1-3 mm per year that it has been for centuries. Yes, that is millimeters, not centimeters, and certainly not meters. The 5 metre figure was obviously taken from someone's mod...

Re: Political correctness gone mad?

I find the posts of the opponents of global warming very puzzling because, while it is sometimes clear what they do not believe, it is not at all obvious what they do believe. For example, does RF accept the evidence from satellite measurements of the Earth's surface temperature, the average troposp...

Re: Political correctness gone mad?

I remain convinced that the observed warming over the last forty years (the period for which we have good satellite data) is real. Natural variation is the more likely explanation. The established range of natural variation overwhelms any warming over that period. ...snip ... I was arguing that the...

Re: Political correctness gone mad?

As an aside from our discussions which I am still enjoying, I gather that there is something out there called social media. Now I am not on things like Facebook, so I cannot comment knowledgeably but I am told that on FB people exchange posts with their "friends". Apparently they tend to h...

Re: Political correctness gone mad?

Firstly, your links on historic sea ice are interesting for an on topic discussion of how far north and west Holland's destroyers had to search. I can quite easily believe that the pack ice limit marked on our maps of the Bismarck sortie were copied from data from just before the map was drawn rathe...

Re: Political correctness gone mad?

I have spent a little time looking at what is clearly known about climate change. The recent (post 1980) data on temperature seems fairly good and shows that the average global temperature for 2014, 2015 and 2016 was 0.74 K, 0.87 K and 0.99 K higher than the average for 1950-1980 https://climate.nas...
