Re: H class Battleships
Ok how do you pay for them at that point? The German economy was rather severely constrained during that period. The same way that Schacht managed to finance the rest of German re-armament in the mid- 1930's ''Constraints on the German economy'' needs to be qualified. Germany still had some one mil...

Re: Tirpitz shelling New York
If Tirpitz has broken out US battleships in the area are likely to have an ammo loadout consistent with a potential ship on ship engagement. Tirpitz on the other hand is on a raiding mission. If it's combined with a shore bombardment mission then just what her loadout is may become signficant.

Re: 3 German battleships in May 1941.
Really? How? German fighters couldn't even reach the fields of 12 Group or 13 Group. By following the original German plan and sticking to it - by taking out the 11 Group airfields and radar stations, but this time with sustained bombing dawn to dusk. Fighters from 12 and 13 Groups are drawn into t...

Re: Destroyers vs. battleships - Comprehensive list from WW2
Suggesting more hits is of little use to us, if we are after a specific relationship between shot and hit we need exact figures. If you accumulate enough of them you have a data base that rises above the inevitable bias of each side over the other. It's of more use than an arbitrary and almost assu...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
Lwd You brought in the M1. And I noted that it is good example of superior American technology. Well you also mentioned it's gun in particular which wasn't developed by the US but by Germany. Then there's the fact that the basic armor design was a British development. So I was uncertain if you were...

Re: Bismarck's 71st anniversary
I know you don't like it, Karl, but fact is, Bismarck was a nazi battleship. Squirm and carp all you want, then have a look at her fantail and the flag she was flying - Nazi. Nazi battleship. nazi, nazi, nazi. what's the big deal? This post is a complete ignorant insult to my post above. This sort ...

Re: Sea Lion 1941
My understanding was there was at least one USMC adviser on the American side as well but that most of his advice was ignored. On the other hand the prewar theoretical work resulted in practical equipment such as the various landing craft and a navy that knew how to work with shore based observers s...

if there are plans for the good lady out there somewhere. It seems there are plans for her sister Scharnhorst but the info on Gneisenau is limited. Without wishing to be overly pedantic should not Gneisenau be a ''he'' as was the Prussian general the ship was named after? No. The convention if both...

Re: Sea Lion 1941
... There were many reasons why Sea Lion would quite likely have failed, but the Germans were no better or worse off than their Allied opponents in terms of combined arms command skill sets. In fact, an arguable case can be made that, in terms of air/ground combined operations (as in tactical air s...

Re: 3 German battleships in May 1941.
... And the question remains : exactly how many dive-bombers actualy participated in the Dunkirk and Crete attacks ? It is a question but Dunkirk is such a poor analog of what an attack on the RN intercepting German invasion convoys would be like that it's simply not worth much work. Crete might we...

Re: H class Battleships
Well this is the 'hypothetical' thread, so maybe we can posit that Germany didn't reach such abysmal levels of productive capacity in the late 20s and early 30s--maybe the reparations demands weren't quite so drastic, the NY Stock Exchange failure didn't bring the entire world crashing to a halt, o...

Re: Destroyers vs. battleships - Comprehensive list from WW2
I just reviewed the thread and you provide no figure of any shots or hits in that engagement. All my figures came from O'Haras three volumes on naval clashes during WW-II, since he is the only source that covers that many incidents and searches for such figures, probably because he understands the ...

In fact, only one side (stb) was examined in a severely limited visibility, during a single pass.
