Re: Increasing Bismarck's Armor By 50% Would Make a Differen

Also a deeper belt would not have helped considering how deep it was in this case. Yeah, the Yamato's tried the deeper belt due to Japanese concerns about near and below waterline its. Seems to have made the TDS a bit more vulnerable, though looking specifically at how many torpedoes these behemout...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

Not sure where these numbers come from, USN post-war analysis showed the number of 40mm rounds required to bring down a plane was in the order of thousands. Same analysis indicated the number of 5"rounds/plane in the order of hundreds. Rather simple really. And the "thousands" is a bit disingenuous...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

The Bofors will put up 120 rounds/minute on average (but could go as high as 160)
Have to be level to get to 160 RPM, and that ain't going to happen in AA fire.

Re: America wins one despite it all

ernie Sanders (I-VT) opined in a 2010 The Nation article that an "upper-crust of extremely wealthy families are hell-bent on destroying the democratic vision of a strong middle-class which has made the United States the envy of the world. In its place they are determined to create an oligarchy in w...

... The Bofors will put up 120 rounds/minute on average (but could go as high as 160), with 2 pounds/round = 240 pounds/minute. ... The 5/38 will put up 15 rounds/minute (but could go at 20), with 55 pounds/round = 825 pounds/minute LOL, forgot to convert my 40mm from KG to pounds. Your numbers are...

Re: America wins one despite it all

When you wish to discuss freedom, I think this is indeed a threat to our freedom. Some contemporary authors have characterized current conditions in the United States as oligarchic in nature.[10][11] Simon Johnson wrote that "the reemergence of an American financial oligarchy is quite recent," a str...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

SO, in the spirit of the thread, USN vs IJN AA capabilities are pretty much in favor of the former... Definitely. I never said that was not the case. My point was that the Japanese 25mm was not as bad of a weapon as it seems to get credit for. It's no Bofers, but that was the most effective light w...

Re: America wins one despite it all

BTW - I am not opposed to fracking unless there is something that shows it is somehow detrimental. I don't hold to any party platform but try to look at anything like this on a stand alone basis. And to oppose it would require nota slight possibility of being detrimental, but a real tangible issue. ...

Re: Increasing Bismarck's Armor By 50% Would Make a Differen

I'd say it would not make a huge difference in general. However, the shell the Bismarck took in the Battle of Denmark straight may not have penetrated - so it would have went convoy hunting with Eugen instead of heading back for repairs. As far as the final clash, Bismarck was really disabled by the...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

Statistics such as the average rounds needed to shoot down a plane can be measleading. Tactical situation is often the most important factor : a ship which is taken by surprise and cannot engage will not shoot down any plane, whatever the number of guns available. My question here Francis - if you ...

Re: Rodney torpedoes compared to Long Lance?

. In the early battles in which torpedoes were dominant (Java Sea & Sunda Strait) the IJN most certainly did not adhere to firing half-salvos at all...For the most part they fired everything they could when they could. I would think the reloading process would keep them from firing ALL of their tor...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

... Japanese doctrine up to 1944 considered 25mm AA guns effective up to 1500m range. Japanese doctrine post-1944 considered them effective out to 900meters range, but this was at least in part due to the need to conserve ammo. Yeah, effective vs. maximum range are of course two different things. T...

Re: America wins one despite it all

I'm afraid freedom has very much to do with it. All the proposed solutions are essentially statist in nature. Statism and freedom are very much at odds with each other. What would be tragic is the ascent of tyrany and no viable energy solutions resulting. That is the most likely result if its Gov d...

Re: Japanese vs US AA capabilities

OK, but note the mention there of the small magazine size, etc. Your rounds per kill don't mean as much if you aren't able to fire very many rounds. Yeah, I'm fully aware of that. Takes the rate from a cyclic of about 240 to a 115 or so practical. Compares fine to the US 1.1" with an effective of 1...

I see what you are saying, Dave. I'm not versed enough nor knowledgeable enough I don't think to make a true determination. What I do indeed know is that the (north) polar ice cap has almost disappeared in comparison to where it was. Apparently the temperatures have spiked quicker than what they can...
