Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

So it wasn't the turn away to port which caused Y turret to jam.

Re: USS South Dakota at Guadalcanal

Alexsandros, you are saying it was impossible for most of Washington's shells to explode in Kirishima. If you are correct, it seems to me it didn't matter very much. Lots of fires were started, the rudder was jammed, the forward magazine had to be flooded, the after turrets lost hydraulic power, and...

Re: USS South Dakota at Guadalcanal

Alecsandros, If AP shells performed as you think, no one would have used the delay the US and German navies used for their shells. How do you know how many hits Rodney achieved? The only ones they counted were the ones seen to burst on impact. If it bursts behind armor you probably aren't going to s...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

What was the comparative radar capability between PoW and Norfolk? I'm thinking W-W might have been on the wrong ship to exercise effective control of the formation.

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

I think everyone here can agree that CAs can hurt BBs. I can't imagine that Norfolk and Suffolk would not have engaged Bismarck if they thought they could hit her. One of them tried, but was mislead by false radar return. If their CO's declined any request to open fire, there would have been evidenc...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

Well said, Wadinga. Reconstructing the engagement is fine and I commend Antonio for that, but I just can't go along with this cowardice idea. None of us were standing there on PoW's bridge when all this was going on.

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

Hi Steve: I have already said it was ok to retreat after having softened her. For sure not when you have only 1 gun out of action, only 1 salvo received on board and your guns are straddling BS..... Bye, Alberto Wasn't PoW out of control for several minutes after the hit on the compass platform? I ...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

When is it ok to turn away from Bismarck? When you have one gun left? None? Or should you then try to ram her?

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

Antonio,

I'm not sure if you've actually said this, but is it your opinion that Norfolk and Suffolk didn't fire at Bismarck because they were afraid she would shoot back at them?

Re: USS South Dakota at Guadalcanal

Dave, I just reread the account of the battle by Hornfischer in "Neptune's Inferno". He says "over 20 hits", and gives Japanese testimony of "30 foot holes" in the deck amidships. My question now is, are you only selecting things he says that agree with your point of view (turret 3), or do you agre...

Re: USS South Dakota at Guadalcanal

Extremely short range shooting by heavy naval artillery naturally produces a large scatter for range. This is because of the extremely flat trajectory. Shells that pass over the target by only a few meters could go hundreds of meters before splashing into the sea beyond. Shells that are just a bit ...

Re: USS South Dakota at Guadalcanal

I think we all know that no US battleship could possibly shoot that well, and certainly not better than a British battleship.

Re: USS South Dakota at Guadalcanal

I don't understand why Rodney's hit count was so low. I served for a time on Tanks in my state's National Guard. I could have hit Bismark with a tank gun just about every time at that range . Probably about 90% or better. I didn't have to deal with the movement of the Ocean, but my target was compa...
