Re: Bismarck in place of PoW

I don't know about this instance, but navies ALWAYS try to target each opposing ship because incoming fire does tend to make it more difficult to shoot back.

Re: Rosselsprung 1942 actual combat

3-gun turret dispersion vs 2-gun turret dispersion will ALWAYS be about 50% bigger, for obvious reasons. Similarly, 4-gun salvos, if fired simultaneously, would yield larger patterns than 3-gun and 2-gun salvos. No, it is not linear. Pattern size does not increase in direct proportion to the number...

Re: Rosselsprung 1942 actual combat

Alecsandros, Were you using the German 50% dispersion number for salvo pattern length? They are different. I uswd the 50% value multiplied by 1.5 which was the coefficient for 38cm turret (salvo) fire. Also 50% value for 16" guns but multiplied by 2.43 Well, here you have it from delcryos, who's nu...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

It appears to me that Norfolk was either trying to close with Bismarck or PoW, depending on the courses. She was really unable to do so because there was not much of a difference in speed and the Germans were mostly going away.

Re: Rosselsprung 1942 actual combat

Bismarck fired four gun groups at Denmark Strait. A&B, then C&D about 10 seconds later. That is what the film shows, and I believe that was German doctrine for those ships. If the seas were heavy Washington would have a lot more trouble than Tirpitz, and that might very well have a significant effec...

Re: Rosselsprung 1942 actual combat

I don't believe the difference in salvo spread. Note that you have the Washington spread actually smaller at close range and twice as large at long range (comparing 3 gun to 4 gun in Tirpitz). Why would the relative salvo spreads change as range increased? Spread would increase of course, but not th...

Re: World War II Japanese radar

Just been reading "run silent run deep" where the us sub uses radar to detect enemy ships. But wouldn't this give the subs position away? Today it would, but in the Pacific in WWII USN submarines used it all the time, to good effect. They often attacked on the surface with deck guns, also. It wasn'...

Re: Denmark Strait and RN Articles of War

I would think 22,000 yds was within range of Norfolk. It was certainly within range of PG during the battle. I can only guess that her speed and course and the target bearing made her fire control optics unuseable. Otherwise I think there is a good chance we would have seen recorded protests from he...

Re: Rosselsprung 1942 actual combat

No, they indicated they were about the same. 3 guns/243m and 9 guns/401m at 25hm. In any case, that spread is small enough to get a good chance of hits. ... this would depend on the base , i.e. the average spread of a single-gun firing. Taking 125yards (114 meters), we have: 3 guns = 276 meters and...

Re: Rosselsprung 1942 actual combat

How is Tirpitz's immune zone at 36,000 yds, where Washington is going to begin hitting her? It's not imune... But such long range hits would be chance hits...especialy in Arctic conditions. Washington would also be vulnerable to 38cm plunging fire at such extreme range. It would be formidable for e...

:D I am wondering when you are going to present the information you received about salvo spread on navweaps. Not quite what you wanted, was it? Have you read Brad's and Bill's answers ? Because they pretty much confirmed my numbers, Steve... No, they indicated they were about the same. 3 gu...
