Re: Luetjens chooses the Iceland-Faeroes Gap instead

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsslpeur.html If you follow this site from May 19 1941 through May 25 1941 it shows the initial low pressure front that dominated the Denmark Straits was shifting south east over the Faros gap on 22-23nd and then Northern Scotland 24rd and Iceland to Ireland on...

Re: Death of the Scharnhorst in ww2

It seems these new tech was difficult to adjust to for both sides. Most German commanders were hesitant to use radar through out the war assuming they could be "seen" at much greater ranges than they could "see" via the radar. Likewise it seems RN were distrustful of Ultra Intel reports and preferre...

Re: KGV class: firing at 0 degree elevation across the bow

Only because of the higher speed they were maintaining, in the heavy seas encountered.

What was the draft at standard displacement for the DoY in 1943?

The mean draft at 44,790 tons was 10.47m while the 'depth at side' was 15.5m- leaving just 5 meters freeboard.

Re: KGV class: firing at 0 degree elevation across the bow

KGV class were rated at 28knots but could be forced to 29.25knots, while Scharnhorst could manage over 31 knots if forced. It did reach 31.65 during trails but those are usually at standard displacement. So the advantage would be at most 2 knots. BTW at DS the seas were 'moderate' swell according to...

Re: KGV class: firing at 0 degree elevation across the bow

The KGV class had excellent seakeeping capabilities which were certainly the best of any treaty limited battleship. If this wasn't the case, then how did DoY run down and sink Scharnhorst in a raging gale? IIRC, the requirement for zero angle firing across the bow was to allow KGV to engage close r...

Re: Prinz Eugen stays with Bismarck

Assuming Prinz Eugen stays with Bismarck, and the rudder hit does occur, how feasible would it be for the cruiser to tow the battleship toward Brest, at least until they can get under air cover and other units can arrive to assist? Most towing is done at only a couple of knots. The RN would still c...

Re: Prinz Eugen stays with Bismarck

If PE stays with Bismarck the fuel issue would have been dealt with to the betterment of the pair. Instead of making for Brest immediately , they would have rendezvoused with the tanker to the south were the waters were much calmer and returned to Brest via a more southern route couple of days late...

Re: Prinz Eugen stays with Bismarck

If every one agrees that the German flak effectiveness would have been notably better [but maybe not enough to prevent all Swordfish attacks] , we can certainly agree that- At least- the lucky rudder hit on the Bismarck would be extremely unlikely with PE also providing flak fire. So end result is P...

Re: Prinz Eugen stays with Bismarck

On another forum the effectiveness of German naval flak was evaluated, albeit with limited samples...When they were on their game - the twin 4" flak in numbers was very effective at driving off enemy air attacks and some times very effective at shooting such attacks down. If the PE avoids the same p...

Re: Graf Spee trying to escape back to Germany...

Hit rates sound like training exercise and not based on real world battles. In Plate AGS got 1 hit for every 45 *11" Shells fired , while the 4"flak got 1 hit out of 200 shells fired. Exeter got 3 hits on 200 shots while the 6" guns got 17 hits on 2065 shots. Against Glowworm , Hipper got 2 hits on ...

Re: Kirov Class Battlecruiser?

According to the Seaforth naval review 2014 their is only one Kirow and another one laid up pending a long refit etc. It's not likely to be ready by 2020. Its only reason to exist is to escort the Kuznetsov CV and lead a SAG . There are 3 Slava that can escort a CV as well. A second one active would...

Re: Graf Spee trying to escape back to Germany...

I've read that the 'Oil purification' unit was not hit since it was below the main armor deck; while the desalinization plant was only damaged and could be repaired. As it was the AGS had 16 days of cruising in the main bunkers so AGS could escape if it could only shake its shadow-ers . The only way...
