Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

While on the subject of McMullen's graphical gunnery plot - 1 - A chart notation timed at approx 0556:00 describes Hood as being "out of action". Can anyone shed light on its possible meaning? 2 - A chart notation timed at approx. 0557:50 describes A arcs as now being open. After PoW's initial cours...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Bill Jurens wrote - I wonder about the 'Guns are OK' commentary. Does it refer to the gunnery system as a whole, i.e. to the guns and the ammunition handling train, etc., or might it merely refer to the fact that the guns themselves -- less of course previously anticipated failures -- were undamaged...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

"Respectfully, this is incorrect: based on McMullen and Barben, the last salvos were fired with all guns operative except A1 (a serious problem partially fixed only for the second engagement) and Y2 (a minor problem similar to the one happened to Y3, that could have been solved in one or few more sa...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

It would also be apropos to include the consequences of Beatty's conduct at Dogger Bank, where his rash impetuosity caused him to drive LION far ahead of the rest of his squadron and place it in an exposed position under concentrated German fire. His ship took seventeen hits in fairly short order, l...

PoW readiness for active service

A different spin on the Leach cover-up debate: it is my opinion that Leach succumbed to pressure from higher-ups to prematurely declare PoW ready for active service.

Re: Cutlass or Hanger?

Cannot confirm with absolutely full satisfaction, but the term "hanger" I believe probably refers to the means of securing the cutlass to the person when not actually in use. Contrary to Hollywood historiography, sailors did not generally carry their cutlasses between their teeth .....

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Re the forum vote -
(a) Track chart reconstruction - Abstain.
(b) The "Cover-up" argument - Unproven.

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

And now for something completely different!!!!! Mr Virtuani was kind enough to refresh my memory that Adm Lutjens included range data in his lengthy transmission which appear to contradict those indicated by Mullenheim-Rechberg in his book. It is unclear as to where exactly Admiral Lutjens o...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

"BS fired at Hood without hitting before 5:58:xx or possibly even after. The accuracy of this statement depends a great deal upon how much credence one wishes to place in Mullenheim-Rechberg's account. > 0553 - Hood opens fire at 22,000 meters (approx. 24,000 yards). > 0555 - Bismarck opens return f...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hello everybody, I am at a loss at what people mean by differentiating "shots" and "shell..." from PoW GAR (http://www.hmshood.org.uk/reference/official/adm234/adm234-509guns.htm) the two different "parameters" total guns fired : the ones we call here shells , the actual fired physical shells. tota...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Indeed, Mr Jurens. One of the annoying pitfalls in my study of history is a confrontation with something that was once such common knowledge that no one felt the need to define it for posterity.

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

. The more interesting comparison would be to compare the gunnery of the two ships between 0553 and 0602. B And that is what we cannot do because we don't know how many hits Bismarck (or PE) scored on Hood. All we know is that Bismarck scored at least 1 x 38cm hit on Hood, resulting in her destruct...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

We know exactly how long lasted the relevant fire action of PoW because her G.O. McMullen defined the interval ( 8 minutes + 58 seconds ), inconvenient as it can be for Mr.Dunmunro. PoW fired 21 salvos. When was the last one fired? What was the time interval between first and last salvo? When was c...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hello everybody, I think we should be back to gunnery figures, not discussing Leach behavior when retreating, that is clearly a subjective topic, where anybody is free to have his own personal opinion. Wadinga wrote: "As far as I can see he nowhere mentions a rate of fire for Prince of Wales," very...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

"The different assessment of Leach may have been (my personal opinion, of course) heavily conditioned by the 15" shell passing close to him and smashing 2 young midshipmen, but this is a "very human" justification, not a "good military" one." > Leach had just witnessed his admiral's flagship blown ...
