Re: A correct attribution for the "Flash Effect" photo?

I think the image is to blurred to be judged correctly without further knowledge. They may be 105mm, 37mm or 20mm guns........ Because other mounts, such as the 2cm guns, also had a "muzzle bulge", and could appear in the photo. Also, we could be looking at the 3.7cm C30 guns, with canvas ...

Re: A correct attribution for the "Flash Effect" photo?

Quite impossible if these guns were engaging PoW. It's difficult to know. The total time in which Prince of Wales was inside the range of Prinz Eugen's 105mm guns was about 1,5 minutes (90 seconds). For the remainder of the battle (12,5 minutes or 750 seconds), the 105mm guns were not engaging the ...

Re: A correct attribution for the "Flash Effect" photo?

Hello everybody, Again I'll try to be breef. Personal discussions, and especially quarrels should be done on the private messaging zone. It robs time and energy for the other members to read pages afer pages of invectives. If heated debate is necessary, I return to a proposition that I've made in th...

Re: A correct attribution for the "Flash Effect" photo?

Excuse me, but I have to insist.
This type of analysis has already been done for another photo from BoDS:

Having more stills from the same time interval will help.

Re: A correct attribution for the "Flash Effect" photo?

Hello, I'll try to be as short as possible: an essential aspect is the fact that the picture NH69730 is part of a longer film. The film is longer and contains more photographic information . Who has the time and equipment can extract a good few hundreds 'stills' from the existing movie, one of which...

Re: Some questions about the battle at the Denmark Strait

At the end of the action PE had fired ~80 rnds from her after turrets and yet we only see about a dozen cases on deck. The turrets still appear to be aimed forward of the beam, which is odd. No evidence of gun smoke. As a side note, I think many shell casings were rolled over board by hand, or simp...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

enemy target ( PoW ) was completely shrouded in chemical smoke Gents, as far as I know, but I understand that I can be mistaken, smoke generators uncommon on large ships (they were fitted on destroyers and sometimes cruisers). Hence, POW probably emitted funnel smoke. Can someone confirm whether it...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

The crucial point is we don't know anything about Bismarck's GAR...but obviously something remarkable has happened towards the end of the action. Again, my opinion: enemy target ( PoW ) was completely shrouded in chemical smoke, therefore firing was done by using radar only (similar to Hipper again...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

And what if Bismarck fired in local control in the later stages of the action? Towards the end of the morning action, guns in a group were definitely observed to "ripple" as if one or more turrets were in gunlayers' firing. Marc, the ripple effect was probably an effect of firing while us...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

@Wadinga You need to consider context before analysing the results. This is hard and takes time, while not offering final conclusions. However, for a clearere historical perspective, cntext is mandatory to be considered. I remember reading somewhere , some time ago, a phrase which sounded like 'cont...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

Fellow Contributors, It has been said: as the effective output of PoW in terms of shells delivered against the enemy per minute was better than Bismarck's one Once again Mr Virtuani is at odds with Admiral Santini who he keeps quoting on PoW's performance, whilst apparently having a different idea ...

Re: More on KGV Class main armament problems

. A minor linguistic point. Guns ordered to be fired would ONLY be those actually ready, not the number bearing. The firing officer would have gun ready lights for those guns "ready" (loaded and bearing). Guns that were awaiting completion of the firing cycle or which were casualties woul...

Re: Bismarck analysis

Given the storm, and ranges of the observations, no definitive answer can be given. Also to be considered is that in the early phase of the battle, KGV was behind Rodney, and her observations were further hindered by Rodney's funnel smoke and main battery gun smoke. Armor piercing hits are very dif...
