Canadian Navy

We never built an aircraft carrir, we bought one off the British, renamed it from the Magnicent to the Bonaventure and eventually it landed in a Japanese scrap yard. We don't have any now

Canadian Navy

Hi All,
So what is your attitude towards the Canadian Navy during WW2, we lost some good ships like the Athabasca even though we didn't have mighty warships like the British and Germans, americans, Italians, Japanese, we might have been equal to Russia.

Hitlers Navy???

How did Hitler feel about Germanys Naval program prior to ww2 and then after it started. Was it with reluctance that he authorized the bigger battleship program rather than spend it more on the U-Boat program? I live in Halifax, where most of the North Atlantic Convoys began and lots of U-Boats were...

Hitler's Navy or Germany's Navy

What did Hitler really think of the German navy prior to WW2 and after the war started. His WW1 experience didn't really bring him close to the Navy so was he happy to spend the money to make the bigger battleships like the Bismark or expand the U-Boat program which was more successfull during the e...

Enigma Code Machine

At the time of sinking did the Bismarck have the Enigma Code Machine installed and were they using it. Did any of the Battleships carry these machines and could it caused some of the failures the Bismarck had?

Can anyone out there tell me what the longest "hit and sink" by a submarine during ww2 was by any of the allied or axis powers?

Distances' - Tiornu & Nlneff

Thank you to both, I did find it through web search and there are pages upon pagesabout action reports and it answers somewhat about my origional question. Without radar sea battles could only happen by "sight seen". Surface ships only. I don't know what the longest "hit and sink"...

Tiornu,
That does sound very interesting "USS Washington's action report at/for Guadalcanal. Is it in the form of a book, where would I get a copy of it?

Distance to Horizon

Thanks Gary, but the point is they had to see the the other ship before they could fire on it. Even in early WW2 with fog like pea soup the chance are you're going to ram a ship before firing upon it. or am I really out to lunch!

Distance to Horizon

Cheers from Canada I guess I'm just stupid but please don't take any pleasure in telling me so. I am new to this forum. During WW2 and in particular the Bismarck and all who came before her a sea battle had to take place by sight is that not so? Fighting over the horizon wouldn't have came until aft...
