Re: Panzerdeck thickness Bismarck correction
...but as the forward panzerdeck over magazines was already installed on Bismarck only the rear Panzerdeck could be reinforced The document is from January 28th, 1937. The Panzerdeck wasn't installed before October 1937, and the after-armoured deck was installed before the forward! At the beginning...

Re: Engine order telegraph and rudder control
@wadinga I don't understand the problem, because I see no contradiction. The speed trials on "measured miles" were carried out with the ship's bottom as clean as feasible. But there weren't that many on Bismarck that had to be carried out: 6 with three shafts and 4 each with 2 or 1 shaft. ...

Re: Engine order telegraph and rudder control
@wadinga Just trust me. There definitely was a direct relationship between speed and knots: Fahrtstufen.jpg It was of course possible to directly command the speed in knots (see last sentence). The engineers had "Fahrttabellen" (speed tables?) to translate the ordered speed into revolution...

Re: Translation of German text
This is a metaphorical term for the people who actually have to deal with it. At least that is what I interpreted it to mean.

Re: Engine order telegraph and rudder control
Stopp means closing the turbine valves or running idle for diesel engines respectively decoupling of the shaft.
2x Stopp means to really stop the propeller with engine power.

Re: Engine order telegraph and rudder control
First question is the numbers. Would they represent a specific speed in knots? Yes Second question is the meaing of "2x" and "3x". I would have thought that the black regions are not connected to the numbers, and you could order "Half speed" ahead, and if you'd want to...

Re: Suffolk sighting at 19:22 on May 23rd, 1941
Do you know whether M-Boot-S-Gerät was used (as the name may suggest) for detecting mines (I guess Bismarck could not use such system anyway to avoid mines sailing at 27 knots on May 23rd), while the Bug-S-Gerät was actually the active sonar system intended for detecting submarines, or whether both...

Re: Suffolk sighting at 19:22 on May 23rd, 1941
@ hans zurbriggen Bismarck had a „Flachlot“ (~shallow sounding device) and a „Tiefenlot“ (~deep sounding device) for echo sounding purposes. She also had a Bug-S-Gerät (bow-S(pecial)-device) and a M-Boot-S-Gerät (~minesweeper-S(pecial)-device). The M-Boot-S-Gerät sat in the bottom of the ship and co...

Re: Suffolk sighting at 19:22 on May 23rd, 1941
...They undoubtably had active sonars onboard, at their extreme bow, I don't know if good for depth measurement. Grenfell suggest this was how Germans avoided minefields, just staying in deep waters. Does anyone know whether Bismarck and Prinz Eugen active sonar (S-Gerät) had this same capability ?...

Re: Suffolk sighting at 19:22 on May 23rd, 1941
Hello Herr Nilsson, thanks for this confirmation: is text of the decoded message (' ein Schlachtschiff und ein Kreuzer in 20°, Abstand 7 sm Kurs 240° ') just reported in a book account (e.g. Baron, Brennecke) / a witness testimony or is it available in any official German record from PG ? If the se...
