Ouch...!!! How did I forget about her. She knew open seas for less than 24 Hours. Archerfish's biggest and indeed any sub's biggest prize.

Re: Best war movie ever?

Even though I love Das Boot, I enjoyed Tora Tora Tora as it covered the factual elements on both sides leading up to that fateful day. It didn't have that hollywood feel to it and was more accurate in it's portrayal. Beware, Tora, Tora, Tora isn't 100% accurate, particulary on the Japanese side. I ...

Re: Kormoran

I believe this is correct, as the crew of Kormoran apparently included, according to Detmers, two officers from the Propaganda Ministry, specifically to compile a film record of the ship's activities. Incidently, as an aside, I understand that the Australian autrhorities are to investigate the wrec...

Re: Best war movie ever?

I am surprised by some of these choices. The Longest Day is indeed an epic, but I would have thought Saving Private Ryan would be better as it more realistically shows warfare for what it is, rather than a roll call of Hollywood stars. For similar reasons I would rate Das Boot as better than Tora T...

Even though stictly not a battle, the Channel Dash of the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and the Prinz Eugen would make a good suspenseful movie.

Re: Now that KORMORAN and SYDNEY have been found. . . .

As you know, the wrecks of SYDNEY and KORMORAN have been found, some 10-14 nautical miles apart, and at depths of 8,100 feet and 8,400 feet, respectively. Let's hope that the Australian government releases whatever it has in its archives about this battle. Our Governemnt has no footage of the battl...

Re: Poseidon Adventure

I think The Poseidon Adventure is a very good film and the producers certainly showed a good deal of imagination. But could this happen in reality - I don't mean the ship capsising, but passengers escaping through the upturned bottom of the ship? It happened on two occassions that I know of and the...

Re: The Final Countdown (1980)

Add to that was that the Nimitz's CAG ended up being the designer and builder of the Nimitz in the movie. Remember that he was standed on that island near the end of the movie. Matin Short met him in the limo at the end. He went by the name of Mr Tideman.

It is a brilliant movie. I am fortunate enough to have a copy of this movie on DVD. If you can get hold of a copy, it is certainly very worthwhile.

Re: Unluckiest Warship

You could probably add the General Belgrano to the list. As USS phoenix, she survived the torpedo devastation at Pearl Harbour only to fall victim to one 41 years later.

Re: Your Favourite War Ship of the 2nd World War

I was trying to decide between which RAN Ships as there is a few to choose from my side of things. There is indeed the Canberra which was my second choice, the original HMAS australia from WW1 or the Diamantina. She is preserved in my home City of Brisbane and refitted to WW2 condition. As stated, e...

Unluckiest Warship

I would like to open this one up and see what comes out of it. I am searching for the most unluckiest Warship. You will understand it from the following incident. During the battle of Jutland HMS Sparrowhawk was sunk during this engagement. She was rammed by a fellow Destroyer in line ahead of her a...
