Re: How did you come to be interested in Bismarck?

Hi everyone I have been crazy with models since I was a child. My first ship model is Grafe spee, and them came New Jersey, Yamaton, Kongo, Bismarck, PE...I got a 1/700 fleet in my cupboard. It is only 15 years ago that I started to know some real Naval knowledge and focus on Bismarck. I say real na...

Re: Tirpitz vs South Dakota according to German sources

Yes, but there is a difference between less than perfect and unacceptable. The US would have used 16.1" belt and 18" turret armor on the Montana class, the latter over 4.5" STS. I don't think they would have done that unless they expected the increased thickness to result in increased protection wo...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood

You're missing the point. Even if the test against the KM armour was flawed, the test against RN armour was not flawed and it showed that 299mm of RN armour could be penetrated by the RN 14/45 at ~1460fps @ 30d target angle. There are differences of opinion but in all probability there wasn't much ...

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood

however, please note the performance of the 14/45 against KM armour as given in actual trials and reproduced on the above webpage My understanding is that these tests were fairly flawed, as they used small plates of KM armor. According to Nathan Okun, the use of smaller plates degrade the armor's p...

Re: PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

Hi lightyear, you are right: these aspects have been (hotly) discussed in several threads, the last one is this very long one (that I do suggest you to read anyway): http://www.kbismarck.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5752, especially the last year posts, covering many aspects of the comparison betw...

PoW's gunnery VS BSM's gunnery

This idea is from a forum thread here which I can not find anymore. There were a intense discussion about if PoW shoot better than Bismarck. One idea is that Pow only had 5-6 guns most of the time and acquired 3 hits while Bismarck had 8 achieved 4 including one deep water hit which should have deto...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries

The Friedrich Ihn started firing right when the aircraft emerged from the cloud cover and before TP opened fire. Most of the aircraft where well positioned off to the starboard to start their torpedo runs on the battleship less than 2km away. The Tirpitz turned away at exactly the right moment foil...

Re: Bismarck's armor against long range hits

1) against 50 mm + 80 mm ther were several perforations on Scharnhorst(La Pallice) and Tirpitz (Tungsten)but no detonations the double impact on wheather deck and main armor deck obviously rendered all fuzes from 1600 lb armor piercing bombs into duds. 2) against 50 mm + 110 mm all bombs that hit b...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Thanks to Dave About the armor's dimishing turn,do you know where I can find the relative material? we always say xx shell penetration is xx mm at xx yards. I always wonder if the formular has taken the dimishing turn into account. If not, the 400mm at 18000 yard should actually be "400mm equivalent...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

To Thorsten, Dave and Alberto Thank you for your answer about this part. It is really interesting to think about the designer's thought behind the layout. It bring out a long standing question of mine--can the turret be protected vs battleship class caliber projectiles? This started long ago from Ok...

Re: Bismarck's armor against long range hits

Hi there: Does anyone know a 1600lbs and 1000lbs AP-bomb can do to deck amour respectively? I thought Yamato's deck armor should be very effective against bomb. But will making deck thicker also make it rigid so the deck is hard to bend to obsorb energy? will it cancel the gain of adding deck armor?...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Hi there everyone :D Brand new guy here. I have read threads in this forum for 100+ hours and I feel information pouring into my head. So I registered and start my 1st post here. I always wonder the slop portion of bismarck's turrets is weard. Is it too light for 180mm at such an important place? It...
