Battle of Balikapapan with Cruisers
Hi all, can we revisit the Battle of Balikpapan, 24 January 1942. Historically Rear Admiral Glassford sailed from Kupang, Timor, with the light cruisers Boise and Marblehead , and six Clemson class destroyers, after Dutch aerial reconnaissance spotted a Japanese invasion convoy of 15 transports head...

Re: Bad weather sailing: turrets pointg to the sides
The photo provided doesn't show bad weather, it's more likely a ship at speed, which would make sense to me, with the water breaking over the bows. I suppose if your heading towards action or just potential danger, then your gun tampions have been taken off, and your trying not to soak the gun barre...

Re: Main Armament of RN Peterel and Tern Gunboats
Hi Wadinga, thank you for your reply, I hadn't thought about high banks, but adopting a multi purpose gun, reflecting concerns over Japanese aviation threats seemed extremely far sighted to me, given the design and construction required, so your suggestion is much more likely.

Main Armament of RN Peterel and Tern Gunboats
Hi all, I just want to confirm the main armament of both the two Peterel class gunboats, Peterel and Gannet, and the two, similar class Terns boats, Tern and Seamew. Many entries just show 2x1 3-inch guns, but the Wikipedia entry for HMS Tern lists them as QF 3-inch 20 cwt, which was the RN standard...

Japanese Morse (Wabun) Code
Hi all, I understand the Japanese can use a different Morse code, called the Wabun Code, which replaces the letters of the Alphabet with 48 Kana characters. This was most certainly used in WW2, but did it create any problems for the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Radio Finger Printing (RFP)
Reading through Peter Elphick's book, Far Eastern File, I came across the details of Radio Finger Printing (RFP), on pages 156-157. I have copied the piece because I would like to know if anyone else is familiar with this, or could add more. "Positive identification of ship call-signs were made...

You're going to need a bit of an explanation, there's a good one here about half way down,

Pom-Pom guns carried by HMS Durban
Hi all I have a question about what Pom-Pom guns were carried by HMS Durban, a Danae class light cruiser, when were they fitted and were they removed. I believe the gun used was the QF 2pdr Mk II, see http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNBR_2pounder_m2.php Reading about the Danae class, see https://en....

Re: Radio transmitters, a thought.
Hi Opanapointer, there were a few as big or bigger than the lost Singapore 100Kw. In 1924 the BBC opened a new 150Kw Long Wave transmitter near Birmingham, England, and they also had a number of 100kw ones elsewhere in the UK before WW2. However, in 1933, Radio Luxemburg opened a 200Kw long wave tra...

Re: North Cape
I think the big difference to consider between this battle and the River Plate, is about the conditions they fought under. Firstly it was very poor light at best, and Scharnhorst lost her search radar very quickly. So the three cruisers can 'see' her better than she can see then. Secondly, how accur...
