Midway question!

Currently watching "Midway" (70's version). Question! Why did the Japanese keep swapping between torpedoes and bombs!? You can still hit a carrier with a bomb but you cannot torpedo an airstrip!? I suppose what I'm asking is if they hadn't prevaricating over ordinance and actually stuck wi...

Re: 'New' Photo of Bismarck on the Elbe

Thanks Jose', yes I see it now. But this "new" photo of Bismarck reminded me of a photo I saw of Hood and demonstrates the awe-inspiring sight that both ships were to their respective countrymen and women! Quite the parallel! https://eisenbahnstiftung.de/images/bildergalerie/82918.jpg htt...

Re: Why built useless battleships?

Is know that for the Great War of Aggression Against Germany, the Battleships were uselees as proved by the fact both side feared use their battleships in battle. So why bother building a ship that will never be built when you can go for more crusiers and submarines, (and some deathly torpedo destr...

Re: Doomed to fail

Hi HMSVF, Re part of your post which stated 'Once you have vessels with turbine engines everything looks a little slow. 23knots was good in the pre-dreadnought era but pedestrian post 1906', isn't it amazing that the RN went on to build the 'QE', 'R' and the 'Nelson' classes with the same or just a...

Re: Doomed to fail

Evening! Your right about the German AC's at Coronel - I was too British focused! That said the British AC's were of the White era and I'm sure that Fisher said of one of the classes (County class from memory) that "White had designed them but forgot the armament" (or similar). AGainst sh...

Re: What is Putin up to?

To argue that the EU is irrelevant to the military situation is quite misleading. All the major European members of NATO are also EU states. Those very same EU states make it logistically possible for those USD 53 billion dollars (and counting) of American war supplies and support to reach the Zele...

Re: Doomed to fail

Byron Apologies, I think I've confused Defence with Black Prince (in regards to papers). I definitely remember reading that Black Prince had a torpedo bar deployed and her course appeared "away" from the course of the HSF (as known) with the torpedoe tube being on the correct side to open ...

Re: Doomed to fail

Thanks for an interesting read! I suppose my views have been tainted by what happened at Jutland, the Goeben affair,Coronel and the "Live Bait Squadron"! I just find them a bit of an anachronism,I suppose that they were overtook by technology yet were "hulls in the water" at a tim...

Re: Was the H.M.S Hood the most powerful ship for 20 years?

Daft question (I'm full of them !) Were the individual ships allowed limited freedom of action as long as they stayed in formation. I'm sure I've read that individual ships opened up the range if their (German)opposite number had a good firing solution. Would this explain the "raggedness" ...

Re: Doomed to fail

Hi HMSVF It is my understanding that the GF faced a shortage of light cruisers at the time. A look at the GF cruising formation suggests that Jellicoe exercised considerable caution with respect to the deployment of his armored cruisers. They were not placed out front. My thoughts, anyways. Byron T...

Doomed to fail

Hi all. I've been pondering. Why did the Grand Fleet deploy armored cruisers at Jutland. They were not particularly fast (23 knots) so they were hardly likely to be able to scout far beyond the main body of the fleet. They were (reasonably) well armed but would be outmatched by the German battlecrui...

Certainly was heated, but it will be interesting to know what the "silver bullet" was. I look forward to hearing on here about it when the details are known!

Re: Was the H.M.S Hood the most powerful ship for 20 years?

These are plainly allegations of some sort of deception without allowing that they may originate in simple errors. Chatfield's ship was under a hail of fire, and he and others may have been more interested in the potential magazine explosion brewing amidships, giving orders for damage control etc a...
