The Bucknill Report re the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales
Folks, For those that have not read it - i.e. the Bucknill Report from 1942 regards the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales in 1941 - and are interested in such, then thanks to Justin Tynan over at Pacific Wrecks :ok: , you can now read it. The hard-copy I had looked like it was a copy of a copy of a cop...

Re: ID'ing of an 'object' wedged under torpedo tubes
One point that was brought up elswhere, although the poster was in agreement that it certainly looks l8ke a warhead, is that it is missing it's arming impeller. The arming propell/impeller is an integrated part of the pistol (or ignitor depending on your origin). The Mk VIII used a top-mounted pist...

Re: Strangest ship misidentification
And we also have, post Coral Sea, the oiler USS Neosho ID'd as a carrier, and the destroyer USS Sims ID'd as a (IIRC) cruiser by an IJN search plane, and eventually attacked and sunk by IJN airborne strike force (after the attackers couldnt find the 'carrier'). Sims sank almost immediately, while Ne...

Re: Strangest ship misidentification
Grayling crash-dived and avoided damage, but the B-17 crews claimed to have sunk a Japanese heavy cruiser in 15 seconds. Belushi claimed to have sunk a sub off California in the movie "1941". "I saw it go down!" Yes, but............... we all know how much cocaine (and 'speedbal...

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
Let's just hope that the Titan submersible had an inner metal (even aluminium) lining of some sort, however thin, as screwing anything - in this case a mount for a monitor - into the / a carbon fibre hull is about a stupid as it comes IMO, and a sure way to induce a weak-point. :negative:

Photos of a shell, and a gun barrel being offloaded from the barge, presumably off one of the two wrecks can be seen in this post on another forum.

Sorry to be dumb, but there are a lotta battleship books out there. I'm drawing a blank. What book is this, exactly?

Re: PoW, Bismarck, Vittorio Veneto Torpedo Hits
Hi Cag, Paul, Seems we are hijacking this thread somewhat by settling on just one of the ships from the OP to discuss, but.................if there is a problem with that I assume a mod can tell us, or move the PoW discussion to its own thread. That being said Cag, very interesting if you can get ho...

Re: PoW, Bismarck, Vittorio Veneto Torpedo Hits
It wasn't until a 1960's naval survey that the damage was discovered and the mystery solved, ............. That survey you quote Cag is the main reason that for many years the torpedo hole was thought to be almost adjacent to the A Bracket. That is, in that report it states that the hole starts &qu...

Re: PoW, Bismarck, Vittorio Veneto Torpedo Hits
Hi Gents, A little late with this input to the thread but better late than never I've heard say. :D Anyway, don't mean to split hairs too finely nor be too pedantic, but............................for the record, that port hit on PoW was slightly further forward than where the OP's diagram above sho...
