Sänger Silbervogel
Silbervogel, German for Silverbird, was a design for a rocket-powered sub-orbital bomber aircraft produced by Eugen Sänger and Irene Bredt in the late 1930s. It is sometimes referred to as the Amerika Bomber, although it was only one of a number of designs considered for this mission. When Walter Do...

Prinz Eugen's Fate
Prinz Eugen was an Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruiser, the third member of the class of five vessels. She served with the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) during World War II. The ship was laid down in April 1936 and launched in August 1938; Prinz Eugen entered service after the outbreak of war, in August...

Re: Why did the crew dump the Arado Ar196 aircraft?
Fire hazard makes sense if it was loaded with fuel and catapult was damaged.

Re: Bismarck Returns to Norway
The British vessels could not maintain maximum speed for very long, fuel consumption would have been to great, so the only remote chance the Bismarck had was plot straight course for friendlier waters near France without delay.

Re: Victorious and its involvement
Agree flying conditions were not favorable at the time. FW-200s were limited as well.

Why did the crew dump the Arado Ar196 aircraft?
Was the Arado Ar196 carrying an enigma machine or were there secret blue prints are documents on board? Maybe the Bismarck had been transporting an atomic device, similar to the mission carried out by the USS Indianapolis in 1945.

Re: Bismarck refuels and does repairs
I would have not refueled or attempted repairs at sea. Time was crucial here. It was a big mistake for the Admiral to break radio silence. Shifting the weight of supplies and etc to mid ship and stern would have raised the bow somewhat, maybe enough to slow down leak. Doing repairs in the open Atlan...

Re: Victorious and its involvement
A German survivor recalls that the order was given to scuttle the ship and set the charges to flood the hull. This was reported in the book ""The Discovery of the Bismarck" by Robert D. Ballard. The single engagement with the Victorious's aircraft did enough damage to buy time for the...

Re: How did you come to be interested in Bismarck?
For me, it was Aviation History, the "Stringbag" (Swordfish) aircraft, then I became interested in Marine War History and engineering technology (like rocket propulsion and guidance control systems) that came out of war time. Always had the "western school history" taught to me a...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
Prinz Eugen should have until air support could research the area. The Bismarck was a new ship and the crew were new as well. Admiral Lutjens's questioned faith in that support would be provided by Germany had become obvious over the course of time in his speeches to the crew. This reflected in the ...

Re: Bismarck Returns to Norway
Attempting to go back through the Strait would have been bad idea I believe. Engaging in battle with British Ships was a mistake (damage and fuel leak). If I were Admiral Johann Günther Lütjens, I would have played hide and seek a little longer, maintaining radio silence. Then, made my run towards F...
