Re: Fleet action with capital ships
Does the KM admiral have the standard 'Don't engage unless absolutely necessary' orders or 'Sink 'em all' orders? If the first, the faster ships will sail away and the PBs get sunk. If the second, the RN ships open the range to initially take the PBs out of the battle and concentrate on the faster K...

Re: No Barbarossa AND Operation Sea Lion Oct 1941
What part of the English coast would the German sea based forces concentrate on?
A quick capture of a port would be essential.

Re: Cape Matapan and Italian WWII fighting procedures
This thread seems to start mid discussion for me with a post by Alberto Virtuani . quoting Pgollin.
Could someone link me to the previous thread where the quote originates.
Thanks

Northcape,
On page 307 of your scanned book, there's a reference to the author seeing tracer marked shells.
Any idea how prevalent tracer was in larger calibre shells?

Re: Bismarck Tirpitz Scharnhorst vs King George V Prince of Wales Hood
Tovey, when he had the choice (before OTL Bismarck chase), flew his flag in KGV. I see no reason why he would swap to Hood.
Therefore I don't imagine Hood would be leading the line.

Re: Comparisons of Axis vs Allied Combat Vessels
Regarding torpedo hits one has to account for the different warhead weights.
Would, for instance, Pola, Newcastle or even Myoko, have survived one Long Lance hit in the same location as their historical hits?
Or would Edinburgh have survived three air launched torpedoes?

Re: Scharnhorst versus three County Class cruisers
What's the weather doing in the Bay of Biscay in early December of '41? Did RAF and Coastal Command aircraft carry out regular patrols with (or without) ASV equipped radar Is there visibility to keep the cruisers under fire from long range. The counties were good sea boats, conditions similar to tho...

Re: Speeds at River Plate
With regard to the http://www.hmshood.com/ship/accelerationgraph.jpg,
The curves will be different for HMS Exeter and a 'County'
Although Exeter had about the same SHP (80 000), she's shorter (575' - 630') and lighter (8,400 - 9,800)
(figures are from Jane's fighting ships WW 2)

Re: Graf Spee trying to escape back to Germany...
If a ship is interred are the crew made to leave or can they stay in the ship and perform (limited?) maintenance/repair work?
And how would Argentina inter a PB? pump it's fuel out? construct some sort of boom?
If interred would the RN have had to keep a presence in the area in case of a breakout?

Re: Falklands war in WWII
I would think a 1600 mile round trip is within the capabilities of most RN WW2 destroyers with a decent margin for operations around the Falklands. V&W class (some of the oldest designed destroyers in RN service in 1940-41) all had a range of 3500+ at cruising speeds. Also, what forces (if any) ...

Bruno turret on Prinz Eugen
I've just been looking at these pictures of Hipper class cruisers: http://www.world-war.co.uk/germany/hipper.php3 If you scroll down to the detail pic of Eugen's 'B' turret starboard side view (With the Flakvierling mounted). There's a compressed gas cylinder mounted near the turret ring. It's not v...
