Re: Could the Type XXI U-boat have won the war?
One of the biggest advantages to stopping or slowing the Allied convoys would be slowing down the influx of trucks to the Red Army (the entire Studebaker run was designated for the Red Army). Without these trucks it would have been impossible both for the infantry to keep up with the armor and for ...

Re: War time drydock construction in Germany
I'd be curious to know ALL the naval-capable drydocks the KM had and where (which ports, etc.) they were located.

Re: Intercepting Force H
But the target of the twins isn't Renown, but Ark Royal. And, again, all that's required is about an hour's delay. If both twins are present, Renown can only chase one. If only one of the Twins is present, she has some 10km extra gun range to work with and Renown doesn't have enough of a speed advan...

Re: Intercepting Force H
Just pointing out that even if Ark Royal was faster it was not enough to make any reasonable difference.alecsandros wrote:Where is this from ?

Re: Intercepting Force H
Renown had a inclined 9in belt backed by a 2in scarf similar to that on Scharnhorst. Krupp pre-war tests give just under 9" of penetration at 20km. This is with RPC/32 propellant against Krupp KC armor inclined at 70 degrees obliquity. During the was, however, the Twins used the more powerful ...

Re: Intercepting Force H
Oh, I'm familiar with the problems that the twins had at the time. However, were the Scharnhorst's engine problems serious enough to impair her fighting ability for just a quick hit-and-run? Did they absolutely keep her from going to sea, or just limit her ability for an extended merchant raiding cr...

Re: Intercepting Force H
That's basically what I was thinking. Given the Twins' speed, they might not have to leave port until late on the 24th or early on the 25th, which I think is the scarier option for the RN: they already have all their pieces in motion, and suddenly what is in effect Germany's strongest surface force ...

Intercepting Force H
Consider that the original intent was for the Twins to sail with Bis & PE. S's issue seems to be her high-pressure boilers, which did work but not as well as they were supposed to (is this a fair evaluation of the issue?). G had some modifications going on while some structural damage was repair...

Re: Bismarck v Warspite
Heh - good point. You could also say the same about ole' Bis: quick Hood kill, pounds PoW, dodging her stalkers and the entire home fleet, "little brother" U-boat pops up for a peek and sees a perfectly lined up shot at Ark Royal but has no torpedoes, leading to at the last minute taking a...

Dave:
Do you have an isometric picture or sketch or something along those lines of a FuMO 26 mattress? I bought a photoetch set of German radar mattresses but if I do have all the bending and assembly correct then the frame is kinda unusual (as well as being a nightmare to assemble!).
Thanks.

Re: Great New Kits Coming!
Any chance that Trumpeter will do a 1/350 California (post-41)? Or (praying or a miracle) a 1/200 California??
As a Californian, there's nothing I'd like better than a nice big kit for the only BB built on the West Coast.

Re: Tirpitz' Radar
There's a 1/350 PE German naval radar fret that has a 26 with ears. In reading another post by you in this forum, you believe you stated that because of the larger mattress of the 26 it had 4 rows of dipoles and this didn't need ears. As you might imagine I am a bit confused. Would you please clarif...
