Re: How would you improve the Kriegsmarine
IMHO i would improve the KM by changing the man at the top with Admiral Carls. What Germany needed was a leader who would take the fleet he had an use it BETTER . The war Germany fought was NOT the war the Z-plan envisioned. Time was the biggest factor the KM lost. IMHO, better would be: 1. Shorten ...

Re: Bismarck's fate.
Given time, I have thought of the possibility of rigging one or more of the Ar 196s as far forward as possible and align them perpendicular to the center line of the ship. Could the plane or planes run at full throttle mimic a bow thruster and added to helm commands kept Bismarck headed towards Fran...

Re: Sea Lion 1941
IMHO, I do not think speculation about the possibility of a US invasion of Europe has taken into account the additional forces that the KM AND the Luftwaffe would have available in 1945. A short list would include: KM CV Graf Zepplin and the three converted merchant carriers Seydlitz 3 M class cruis...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
Obviously a pre-cursor of the Z Plan. It would have been interesting if he had swapped places with Yammamoto and see how he would have tackled PH and Midway...... Which admiral are you proposing to switch? If you are proposing switching with Admiral Carls it would be VERY INTERESTING to contemplate...

Re: Sea Lion 1941
IMHO I CAN see Hitler giving the British some VERY REASONABLE terms. He never wanted to fight them in the first place. To back up my opinion, why did the Germans give the French such reasonable terms? (Raeder wanted some of the French fleet units surrendered to Germany and a naval base in the Med fo...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
Fi 167 had folding wings with a glazed cockpit and had a much better payload range figures than the Fi 156 ..it could carry an air torpedo and with better engine [DB 605?] could make 240mph or more and be fitted out with a couple of 20mm guns . That way it could also provide elementry airdefense ag...

Re: Sea Lion 1941
I had an additional thought on this subject last night. What if the British work out a peace plan with Hitler and then just supply the Soviets with equipment and let them suffer the losses?

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
With both the Fi 156 and Fi 167 the Germans would actually have had a problem with keeping the planes on the deck when the ship was headed into the wind unless the wings were folded. I have read somewhere and seen the photo of a Swordfish taking off w/o pilot when the carrier it was on turned into t...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
I have a question for you. The 1937 test of the storch landing on the Greif with a small deck [12 x 25m] was a limited success. Does any one know how much deck space did the Storch need to land on this Japanese Amphib? Akitsu Maru is listed as having a 404' long flight deck and was able to operate ...

Re: Sea Lion 1941
IF Britain chose to fight on, can they keep India in line or do the rebel forces there contact the Germans. Do the Australian and New Zealand governments continue to support an European conflict after the losses they would have endured in the Med and North Africa? Do the French continue to stay neut...

Re: Sea Lion 1941
Would an invasion have been necessary? I believe the loss of control of the Med and release of the Italian Fleet into the Atlantic would have toppled the Churchill government. If not, would not Rommel's forces been reinforced and the oil fields in Iraq and Iran been seized. The British might well ha...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/guides/Soviet_Merchant_Marine._German_Ships_in_Soviet_Merchant_Navy_after_WWII Looking at this site these ships had length and width of 135 x 18.2m . Could such planes land on such a small deck? These ships are of similar size to the same type of ships the British Navy...

Re: Sea Lion 1941
I don't see a seaborne invasion in 1941 as being possible without firstly the strategy outlined in the last post being pursued. And there is one other problem that the Fuhrer would obsess about. The fear that Stalin would try to stab him inthe back if he concentrated his land forces for an invasion...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
I have read the many interesting post on this topic and other topics in this forum on the subject of a German aircraft carrier. I have come to believe that it COULD HAVE been a better deal for the KM to convert some smaller ships into ESCORT CARRIERS. If adding this discussion to this topic is not t...

Re: What if no Rheinubung but beowulf in Jun 41
Overall I don't think it would change anything, especially as the assault on Lenningrad was really a sideshow to the more critical target, Moscow. Of far greater importance to the Germans failure to take Lenningrad was the failure of the Finns to advance further to the north east of the city and cu...
