Re: Historical Naval actions that would make good movies?
I have been reading The Great War in Africa by Byron Farwell, and have become re-familiarized with the Konigsberg scenario. More and more I am thinking that this would make a very good war film. It has a lot of action and suspense with ship to ship action (Konigsberg sinking the Pelican, Konigsberg ...

Re: Dogfighting Aces WW2
If I make a suggestion, if you want to find dogfights, you should probably look at early war actions between the Germans and Soviets. Two factors improve the odds of finding them there. Action there tended to happen at lower altitudes because the air forces concentrated on support of ground forces....

Re: Dogfighting Aces WW2
I think that the main problem is that WWII didn't have dogfights in the WWI sense. In fact, pilots who persisted in attempting WWI type dogfights were soon dead pilots. The sheer number of planes were mentioned in other posts but, as important, was the difference in conditions. WWI combat was a muc...

Dogfighting Aces WW2
I've studied World War One plane vs plane combat a bit more extensively than WW2. Though I am aware of the top aces of WW2 and the campains they would be connected to, I was curious if anyone knows of any specific WW2 aerial encounters between established aces. World War One had its fair share of th...

Re: The movie: Battleship!
Saw a preview of this during Cowboys and Aliens. Aliens do seem to be the go-to bad guys these days, and they are dipping into historical realism to do so. Maybe it was Aliens who secured the victory over the rampant Napoleon at Waterloo? hmm At any rate, I agree, I hope the Iowas sinks something too.

Battleships and Battle Cruisers, 1905-1970: Historical Development of the Capital Ship by Siegfried Breyer. Available on Amazon. This book is indespensible for those interested in Battleship design. Incredible uniform line-drawings Translated from the German, and with a certain German bias, it is ne...

Agreed. That would be a much more favorable time for the Argentine chances.José M. Rico wrote:Why don't delay the attack on the Falklands until May 1940 when the UK and France are busy trying to stop the German assault in Western Europe and naval forces busy in Norway?

Re: Falklands! 1939
Were all those units fully operational by then? Most of the naval, yes. Argentina had embarked on a healthy rebuilding/upgrading program for her naval forces during the 30s. They were ranked at the beginning of hostilities as the 8th most powerful navy in the world, more than likely because of the ...

Falklands! 1939
The Scenario: Falklands! 1939. Dateline, Argentina, November 2, 1939. Military forces under the leadership of fascist general Carlos Aleixandre have taken control of the country. Protests and threats of sanctions from the United States and other nations in the Western Hemisphere have been ignored. D...

A note on the Brit carriers. Eagle is of course the ex-Almirante Cochrane, not the Almirante Latorre which remained a battleship in the service of Chile until 1958.

Re: The most successful and most unsuccessful Warships
Yes, I had mistakingly ommited the parts of the Goeben's career before arriving in Constantinople on 10 Aug. 1914, such as the aforementioned bombardment of Philippeville, a clash with the light cruiser Gloucester, and the remarkable evasion of superior forces across the Mediterranean.

Re: How would you improve the Royal Navy
Given the problem of Britain's overseas empire (far-flung our navies melt away), my fleet construction program would concentrate on the notion that Britain needs to protect convoys, and have ships available for many stations and possible points of conflict all over the world. The core force of BBs/B...

Re: Historical Naval actions that would make good movies?
Hello, Great to be aboard. I love naval war movies, and here are a few that I would love to see made: Flight of the Goeben -- This could be an incredibly suspenseful story, with British and French naval forces pursuing the German battlecruiser Goeben through the Mediterranean. The political story is...
