Re: dispersion of shells

The Admiral supervised the programming of the computer, the computer was doing the calculations for the ballistics tables. Having her to the donkey work would have been a wee bit of overkill. When I met her she was dedicating the new "Super" Computer Center at North Island Naval Station. S...

Re: dispersion of shells

Quality control in gunpowder production may be an issue. The age of the barrel lining can produce variations at target. The pitch and roll of the ship is a big factor in accuracy insofar as I recall. Re: The USA Presidential election 2024

Re: Maximum spotting distance for sailing vessels

On a Windjammer cruise in the Caribbean "a few years ago" I got to the top of the main mast and spotted the ship we were going to meet for a beach party. I saw a man waving at me, apparently standing on the ocean. As we got closer I saw he was in the same I was, albeit on a smaller ship.

The winds along the West Indies are generally WNW. Then the prevailing winds tend to go north along the North American coast. The wind then go eastward toward Europe. Many charts show a clockwise rotation in the North Atlantic, but not all. So, catch the easterlies until you can bend for Florida and...

Re: Launching torpedoes

UPDATE: The last time I was on a surface combatant with torpedo tubes, c. 1977, the torpedoes were launched with compressed air. These "air slugs" didn't give any clue there had been a launch. EVIL NCO: I once told a striker to standby on the port side with they were testing the starboard ...
